WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The Department of Homeland Security has authorized U.S. Secret Service protection for Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ben Carson, ABC news tweeted on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the two candidates formally requested 24-hour protection, which could involve nearly 300 agents from the Secret Service, the agency that guards the president and other high-profile political figures. (Reporting by Lisa Lambert; Editing by Susan Heavey)

2016 Presidential Campaign

Who receives protection?

The Secret Service DOES NOT determine who qualifies for protection, nor is the Secret Service empowered to independently initiate candidate protection.

Under 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7), "[m]ajor Presidential and Vice Presidental candidates," as identified by the Secretary of Homeland Security, are eligible for Secret Service protection.

Title 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7) authorizes the U.S. Secret Service to provide protection for major presidential and vice presidential candidates:
Protection is authorized by the DHS Secretary after consultation with the Congressional Advisory Committee
The Congressional Advisory Committee includes: Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Minority Leader, and one additional member selected by the others

Criteria have been established to assist the DHS Secretary and the advisory committee in their decision making (as of 2008). Candidates must:
Be publicly announced
Have some degree of prominence as shown by opinion polls
Be actively campaigning and entered in at least 10 state primaries
Be seeking the nomination of a qualified party
Have qualified for matching funds in the amount of at least $100,000
Have received contributions totaling $10 million

Title 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7) states that the U.S. Secret Service is also authorized to protect spouses of major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, as identified by the DHS Secretary, within 120 days of the general Presidential election. Some candidates have received protection earlier in the campaign pursuant to Presidential memoranda.

I'm surprised that the Capitol Police haven't picked up Sanders, even if he doesn't warrant Secret Service Protection.

Certainly if he asked, I'd imagine they would provide it. If he were to win the nomination I believe he'd have little choice but to accept it.

I wonder if Carson or Trump (bite my tongue) ever made it to the WH -- would they order that visitors to the WH with "valid permits" be allowed to bring their weapons with them? After all, according to their logic, gun free zones are bad and wouldn't more people with guns (the secret service can't be everywhere in the WH all the time) make it even safer for everyone at the WH?

Bush gave Obama SS protection well before he became the Dem candidate and well before he was entitled to it.

And it could be a good thing. Reagan became Saint Ronnie after he was shot. Can you imagine the love fest in the media if one of them was wounded, or the sympathy the eventual Repub candidate would have if one of their number was assassinated?
