New Hillary Clinton TV Ad Focuses on One Topic: Gun Violence
Source: NY Times
Hillary Rodham Clinton is showing a new television spot in Iowa and New Hampshire in which the only words are the candidate talking about ending gun violence.
The spot would have been hard to imagine even four years ago a presidential candidate running a television ad featuring nothing but a stump speech about guns, a politically sensitive topic in many parts of the country.
But the ads are a reflection of both the Democratic Partys drift toward the urban left and a shift in the politics of the national debate over guns.
The spot is a clip from Mrs. Clinton speaking at a town-hall-style event during one of her campaign stops.

(4,229 posts)The polling for making guns an issue is just not there.
Howard Dean allowed gun friendly dems to run in rural states and we retook the house and senate.
Obama talked a little about guns and won. He did little to push gun control and won re election.
Unless there is a huge urban turnout for Hillary I don't think she can win making gun control such a prominent part of her campaign when the polling, even in a place like Colorado is just not there.
It will be so sad because the GOP will get to replace Ginsburg and cement a long term conservative majority on the supreme court.

(4,229 posts)This really worries me. We need a full 16 years of democrats for the country to turn around.

(39,171 posts)as long as she does not feed fuel to the fire by running her own gun control ads, she should be fine.

(57,936 posts)She can't get a bill for gun control passed unless she has a majority in Congress.
This is the only issue on which she thinks (mistakenly) that she has a better viewpoint than Bernie.
Poor Hillary.
Her stands on the issues are weak.
She favors the death penalty but says she wants gun control.
She want to insure that guns don't get into the hands of the mentally ill. But who defines mentally ill? And what about people haven't been diagnosed although they are mentally ill?
And what about people who have been diagnosed but recovered?
And then, what about people who kill others not because they are technically mentally ill but because they simply have mean personalities. That's what is wrong with most killers. They aren't so much mentally ill, i.e., confused, as they are anti-social or very self-centered, borderline personalities.

(19,243 posts)This is the most sensible route to take right now to keep up the momentum of the massive decline in gun violence we've seen over the past 25 years. It is not unduly burdensome on gun owners if done properly, and has a good chance of surviving a Supreme Court challenge (and at this point, any gun control measures introduced into law will be taken to the courts by the NRA or other gun rights organization).
Throw in improved legislation to reduce the rate of suicide (2/3 of all gun deaths are self-inflicted gunshot wounds), and we could do some real damage against the gun-related death rate.

(4,229 posts)Manchin/Toomey was entirely reasonable but it went down in flames and really hurt Manchin in the polls. People were protesting at his office in WV.
Bill handed congress to the GOP over this issue.
I think she should be focusing on economic fairness issues instead but looks like she wants to keep a GOP senate.

What about the swing states?

Source: Huffington Post
It's "worth considering" whether the United States should emulate Australia by instituting a national gun buyback program, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Friday at a town hall in New Hampshire.
A man in the audience asked Clinton whether she thought it would be possible for the U.S. to enact such a program, and if not, why. Gun buybacks have happened at the metropolitan level in the U.S., but any effort at the national level would be sure to run into intense political opposition.
