V&A Museum turns down Margaret Thatcher wardrobe

Source: BBC

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has turned down the chance to exhibit former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's clothes.

Lady Thatcher's family offered the contents of her wardrobe to the V&A.

But the gallery said it collected items of "outstanding aesthetic or technical quality" rather than garments with "social historical value".

More than 300 items will now be sold at auction next month instead. Lady Thatcher died two and a half years ago.

The Tory press in the UK is predictably up in arms about this. Which is unnecessary on their part. I very much doubt that Margaret Thatcher brought her clothes with the intention of them ending up in the V&A Museum (which is well worth a visit when in London)

fainting from having the vapors when viewing her plain and ordinary clothing. Mostly black or blue jackets and skirts, so maybe they thought the public would relate poorly to the color scheme as they probably felt black and blue after the Thatcher administration got done with them.

OK, to be honest she did have a hat or two that were towards the stylish side.

BARONESS Thatcher’s iconic outfits are to be auctioned off to old, rich men who will put them on in front of full-length mirrors.

More than 300 power suits will be sold to men who claim to be buying them for their historical relevance but will be parading up and down the bedroom in them before nightfall.

Auctioneer Stephen Malley said: “We’ve taken so many calls asking if they’d fit a 36R suit size we’ve had to put the information on our website.

... I would like to add my own pith: Why do so many British men like to dress in drag? They all want to be queen for a day.

It's not like she was a fashion icon. On the other hand someone like Diana
WAS associated often with her unconventional fashion sense. It was more a
part of her identity so in that case it might make more sense to keep and/or
display her clothes.

When I think of Thatcher the only identifying clothing I even recall is her hats.
But even they are not that memorable.

What they said:

"The museum is responsible for chronicling fashionable dress and its collecting policy tends to focus on acquiring examples of outstanding aesthetic or technical quality."

What they meant:
"She bought that crap off the rack at Woolworths. You want us to display THAT?"

"The museum said it wouldn’t provide a home for the wardrobe as the collection did not represent “outstanding aesthetic or technical quality” – even though a few of the gimp masks are quite exquisite."
