Clinton Backs Decision to Send US Commandos Into Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton supports the decision by President Barack Obama to deploy a small number of special operations forces to northern Syria to work with local ground forces in the fight against Islamic State militants.

Campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement that Clinton "sees merit in the targeted use of special operations personnel." He added that Clinton also strongly "supports ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict."

But, he said, she opposes the U.S. entering a larger ground war in the Middle East to combat the rise of Islamic militants.

As secretary of State, Clinton advocated for a more aggressive U.S. role in the Syrian conflict. Earlier this month, she called for a no-fly zone over the area, a move the administration opposes.

They are advisors to military units that lack leadership and tactical expertise. Their presence will have a significant effect on those military units.

You havent figured that out yet??? They have the rare title of Bush "Honorary Family Member" bestowed upon them many times by those snakes and they accepted it eagerly. And, No, to all the jackasses that think thats just common DC politics. It is not. Jimmy Carter was condemned by these jerks while the Clintons were congratulated. Because they helped cover up IranContra and other crimes by Bush Sr so his entire administration could be inserted again under his son's name in 2000.

The last time we tried to save a people from a Baath party dictator backed by Russia, we made a bigger mess, either that, or work WITH Russia, to focus on Isis, who has made threats against EVERYONE. Are you prepared to tell young men and women why they will die for Syria, especially as many of these "moderate rebels" turned out to be either isis or saudi pawns (remember the nation that provided 15 out of 19 hijackers)

...is by destroying your enemy so soundly and mercilessly that brought to their knees, their cities destroyed, an entire generation of their young men decomposing on battlefields, they beg for unconditional surrender.

Take note that Germany and Japan, once just as fanatical as ISIS, have been quite pleasant lately, productive and contributing positively to the betterment of humanity.

Unfortunately, we don't fight wars this way anymore.

The son of a Syrian refugee named Steve Jobs showed that they can add to the nation, and their status as refugees is strong that any Marco Rubio's parents enjoyed. We owe this bnecause WE helped ruin their nation.

As far as Isis first world attacks, well, as my 15 out of 19 statement showed, we are doing NOTHING to make the suadis accountable for the billions they spend, are we? Again, we work WITH Russia, just like we did in world war two, and let the combined forces of the eagle and bear POUND ISIS to DUST!

and for anyone coming from the Vietnam generation, no excuses. The best military advice I heard was wait until the locals(governments) on the ground gave the US unconditional permission to wage a total campaign on its own terms- for which it may also be too late for the swift result necessary.

You don't do war with piecemeal compromises involving escalating involvement of troops or weapons or bombing. But the statement seems more theoretical than damning. The adviser claims it more as a mindset more interested in diplomacy. meanwhile all the options seem all blown to hell by the entry of Russia in a more decisive way, daring the US to get bogged down in the problem or lose all influence in the region. And no, why should Russia be diplomatically helpful toward any US aims except the elimination of ISIS only by offering to get off Putin's back in Europe? I think the less than stellar or decisive
US performance has screwed the entire picture of US involvement in any way whatsoever.

The US helps to clean up ISIS while Russia may help, but definitely will still start collecting US made weapons from the dead bodies of anti-Assad forces in Syria. The US does little or nothing except get shoved aside back into our Iraq war crime scene. The US sends more weapons and men around to prove we still mean something without really accomplishing anything. The US goes to the bargaining table to...?

Luckily the moronic GOP is fixated on whatever in blazes Benghazi means as a campaign chip, then again that helps avoid touching the mess.

Turkey, and it will affect Europe and other areas if something isn't done.

For those that assume it is just Hillary supporting this action, they are ignoring the fact that Bernie has spoken many times about the very real threat that ISIS poses, and fully supports the notion that they need to be stopped.

When Bernie was on This week with George Stephanopoulos, he made it very clear that he would NOT end the drone campaign.

Though I expect some will use this thread as an opportunity to bash Hillary, they should understand that Bernie isn't that far removed from engagement of ISIS

what they want to see. As I also related, Sanders is NOT a pacifist, and believes we must stop ISIS. He also will NOT eliminate the drone program.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that he supports President Barack Obama's decision to keep troops in Afghanistan, prolonging the war beyond 2016.

Obama announced last week that he would keep 5,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after he leaves office in 2017, breaking his promise to end the war during his tenure. He originally planned to maintain only a small military presence based at the U.S. embassy there.

During an interview on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday morning, host George Stephanopoulos asked Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, whether he backs keeping U.S. troops in the country.

"Well, yeah, I won't give you the exact number. Clearly, we do not want to see the Taliban gain more power, and I think we need a certain nucleus of American troops present in Afghanistan to try to provide the training and support the Afghan army needs," he said.
