Tucson taxi drivers win ruling in bid for union

Source: Arizona Daily Star

A Tucson taxi drivers’ group has won a ruling from the National Labor Relations Board that they are employees and therefore are eligible for union representation.

NLRB Regional Director Cornele A. Overstreet ordered an election to allow drivers for AAA Transportation/Yellow Cab to vote on whether to be represented by the drivers’ group, Tucson Hacks Association.

The association petitioned the NLRB seeking employee status in 2013. Its petition was initially rejected, but the group requested and won a review.

In his Oct. 23 ruling, Overstreet found that AAA/Yellow Cab has significant control over its drivers, including control over their income through dispatch procedures, and that the drivers represent a distinct community of interest.
