United Continental Reaches Tentative Pact with Mechanics Union

Five years following the merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines that created the airline United Continental, the company and its mechanics union said on Friday they had reached a tentative accord on the first joint labor deal since the merger, one United official called the accord industry leading.
The pact of six-years that the more than 9,000 mechanics will be given to vote to accept or to reject comes following over three years of on and off again negotiations, partly with the assistance of mediators at the federal level.
While the mechanics from the two subsidiaries have long been able to work on aircraft interchangeably in its combined fleet, they did not have a contract even though each is represented by the IBT or International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
If the contract is ratified, it would be a huge step ahead for the efforts of the airline to smooth problematic labor relations following the sudden departure of Jeff Smisek the CEO last month.
