Reports: HP poised to eliminate up to 30,000 jobs

Source: Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hewlett-Packard is poised to eliminate as many as 30,000 jobs to compensate for dwindling demand for personal computers as more people connect to the Internet on smartphones and tablets, according to reports published Thursday.

The looming cuts cited by Bloomberg News and the technology blog All Things D would trim as much as 9 percent of HP's workforce, based on the 349,600 people employed by the Palo Alto, Calif., company as of last October. A breakdown on HP's website listed 324,600 employees, but company spokesman Michael Thacker said the information was wrong. He pointed to the October figure listed in HP's annual report as the most accurate head count.

Bloomberg News says HP is mulling 25,000 job cuts. All Things D, which is affiliated with The Wall Street Journal, estimates the purge will jettison 30,000 jobs. Both reports cited unnamed people familiar with HP's plans.

Thacker declined to comment on the reports.

To be perfectly honest with you, I never did like HP products to begin with that's why I use Apple or Sony.

I have always liked their printers. It's a sad comment on the economy, but technology does this kind of thing on a regular basis.

Most engineering firms where I've worked have used HP plotters

Works great. Costs a fraction of an Apple product. Sony is overpriced too and they aren't even close to what they used to be.

now they make junk. I just replaced a client's LaserJet 4+ which had been running in their office since 1992 without a hitch. What did I replace it with? Another 4+ with a low page count I bought on eBay for about $100.

i bought a laptop from them and it had problems in a year. i didn't even use it much or download much on it. mostly browsing . but i had the warranty so they "repaired" it. but it had problems in a year again, and again after that. i actually paid for it a few times.

i have a dell now which i had for over 4 years and haven't had problems with it like with the HP and i use it more than i did the HP also.

1982, there's no desktop computer chez nous. Just a laptop(HP), an ipad and an ipod.

Little screen, difficult to navigate...I just like my computer. Easier to type. Phone is for calls, GPS when traveling, and the kids playing Angry Birds.

than just PC's. Last year the bought autonomy which was supposed to give them a full range of software. They are trying to get into the services business and compete against IBM. A couple of years ago they bought EDS for the consulting arm. They way overpaid for autonomy and it was a cash deal so the stockholders had no say. Meg was given a crap hand left over by both carly and the last couple of CEO's.
