A hunter has shot dead what is believed to be the biggest elephant killed for sport in Africa for 30 years, according to reports.
The animal, one of the largest elephants ever seen in Zimbabwe, was killed on 8 October in an area set aside for private hunting, which borders the Gonarezhou National Park, The Daily Telegraph reported.
A German hunter reportedly paid about £39,000 for a permit to shoot a large bull elephant and was led by an experienced local guide.
Organisers of the hunt declined to name the hunter, who went to Zimbabwe to shoot the so-called Big Five of targets: an elephant, a leopard, a lion, a buffalo and a rhinoceros.

Why doesn't the U.S. pay Zimbabwe to help us fly a bunch of drones over there to blow up hunting parties that threaten endangered species?

(1,573 posts)...if it could be made legal, can you imagine the numbers of rich, "my gun is longer than your gun" psychos who would pay to be able to kill another human being without any consequences? The one absolute provision would have to be that they shoot each other, not some hired prey. What a challenge!

Less than three months after Cecil the Lion was shot dead, a German hunter has killed a large elephant with 122 pounds tusks in a game park in Zimbabwe.
The elephant is thought to have been the biggest elephant shot in living memory when it was killed on October 8 in Gonarezhou National Park in south-east Zimbabwe.
The majestic animal's tusks weighed 122 pounds and were so big that they dragged along the ground, according to Johnny Rodrigues Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.
The hunter is believed to be a German national, who reportedly paid $60,000 (£39,000) for a hunting permit to shoot the colossal bull elephant as part of an organised hunt, according to The Telegraph.

(13,661 posts)or unless there is a scientific reason to "cull" a herd that can't sustain itself (which usually happens because idiot humans kill predators and allow for the proliferation of "prey" species) hunting is an abomination. Anyone who considers it "fun" to kill another living being is demented.

(22,845 posts)In January, The Herald, one of Zimbabwes main daily newspapers, reported that there are 80,000 elephants in the country, more than the national game parks have the money or the ability to handle. Feeding these elephants uses up scarce resources, and Hwange National Park alone would spend up to $500,000 annually just for water for their elephants, said Geoffrey Matipano, the acting director of the National Parks and Wildlife Authority.

A Zimbabwean conservation group has vowed to identify a German hunter who shot one of the largest elephants seen in the country, so the man can be publicly vilified like the killer of Cecil the lion.
Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe conservation taskforce, confirmed that the man, as yet unnamed, had a permit when he shot the male elephant last week. The animal was unknown to Zimbabwean experts and is believed to have wandered across the border from South Africa, he said.
Such old, large elephants were almost never sighted, Rodrigues said. Theyre very, very rare. His tusks weighed over 54kg (119lb) thats unheard of. You might have 10,000 or 15,000 elephants, but only one in that herd whos so majestic and iconic.
The German hunter had paid a lot of money to go on a four-day hunt and had the correct licence and permit to shoot an elephant, Rodrigues said. He added that killing such an elephant was wrong and the hunter should experience similar treatment to Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who faced public protests after he shot Cecil, one of Zimbabwes best-known lions, in July.
