South Dakota tribe to open nation's 1st marijuana resort
Source: Associated Press
FLANDREAU, S.D. (AP) The Santee Sioux tribe has already proven its business acumen, running a successful casino, a 120-room hotel and a 240-head buffalo ranch on the plains of South Dakota.
But those enterprises have not been immune to competition and the lingering effects of the Great Recession, so the small tribe of 400 is undertaking a new venture opening the nation's first marijuana resort on its reservation. The experiment could offer a new money-making model for tribes nationwide seeking economic opportunities beyond casinos.
Santee Sioux leaders plan to grow their own pot and sell it in a smoking lounge that includes a nightclub, arcade games, bar and food service, and eventually, slot machines and an outdoor music venue.
"We want it to be an adult playground," tribal President Anthony Reider said. "There's nowhere else in American that has something like this."

(12,655 posts)i am glad that first nation people are finding ways to make money.
i am not a fan of casinos but would rather see that than a playboy ranch or canned trophy killing.

(28,270 posts)I'm sure the tribe will make tons of money. And they are selling a natural pain and cancer fighting plant.

(4,292 posts)You can't grow good weed in South Dakota (unless they use indoor methods, including aquaponics). I know because I went to school in Wisconsin, and "Midwest Ragweed" was the worst.
Now, if the Seminoles in south Floida would pick up on this idea, using an ideal year-round climate, then they could really give the Tragic Kingdom (Disney) a real run for the tourism money! They already have reservations in the Everglades and just outside of Tampa.
And it would be worth it just to watch the Florida Republicans' heads explode, since they wouldn't be able to do a damned thing about it! Unless, of course, they are true capitalists and legalize weed here.

But I think they're gonna grow indoors.

(6,448 posts)most marijuana is now grown indoors. Better controls, higher yields, less contamination, etc. Plus... green-housing, hello!

(4,292 posts)But if this really takes off -- and I think it would -- they would need a greenhouse the size of... the state of South Dakota.

(2,978 posts)Our GOP is nuts and literally just tried to make local government ordinances (any of them) illegal in the last few hours of this budget session (it's getting shot down as I write). But if growing/selling weed is legal on any reservation and our NC GOP can't do anything about it . . . dayum. This former tobacco powerhouse state could grow some mighty fine weed, even in mountain valleys I suspect.
