SHAMOKIN The Shamokin Area Education Association will continue to strike today and will appear in court Wednesday to fight an injunction that would end the potential 14-day strike two days earlier than originally expected.
Although union president Mary Yohe was unable to be reached for comment Monday, the unions Facebook page was updated late Sunday night to explain the latest on the work stoppage following a 7 p.m. negotiation session Sunday.
"Our negotiating team has made every effort to come to an agreement with our school board," the union stated. "We have met on two occasions, hoping to come to a tentative agreement and settle our contract. Unfortunately, the board was ill prepared. They did not appear ready to settle this. Their offers were regressive in nature. We will not be returning to school on Tuesday."
School Board Director Charles Shuey, a member of the boards negotiating team, said the board stands firm on its offer of $1.5 million lump sum toward salaries and 5 percent on health care with an increase from $1,000 to $2,500 for stipend on those employees who forgo healthcare.
