Obama on debate: Nothing patriotic 'about talking down America'

Source: CNN

As Republican presidential candidates lay into his record, President Barack Obama on Wednesday chalked up the attacks to expected election-year politics but said there was "nothing particularly patriotic" about their rhetoric.

"Despite the perennial doom and gloom that I guess is inevitably part of a presidential campaign, America is winning right now," Obama said at a meeting of the Business Roundtable in Washington. "America is great right now. We can do even better."

He cited job creation, the rising stock market and millions of Americans who now have health insurance as examples of a successful presidential run.

"You wouldn't know any of this if you were listening to the folks seeking this office that I occupy," the President told the group of American chief executives.

At DU -

It's nice to be reminded that the GOP is bunch of asswipes by President Obama who don't really care about America at all. Just their own egos and the lies they tell themselves.

"Wake up America! Obama is killing us!" That's the message on a billboard near my home. I'm not sure why Obama is killing us. I guess it has something to do with being born in Kenya, being a secret Muslim, gay marriage, providing free housing for all illegal immigrants, and so on. The Republicans run completely on fear, although it is a type of fear that appeals to patriotism and love of country, so they have to propose there are many, many things wrong with the government. They try to avoid saying something is wrong with America, preferring to lay the problems at the feet of "gummit." With Trump out there, blasting his rhetoric, the others have to say some pretty strong stuff to get noticed.

I live in Washington State, on the Olympic Peninsula, and the billboard is on the way to.... I can't remember. It might be on the road to the ferry boat, or the freeway going south, or some other road. I remember seeing it twice, so it's someplace I go regularly. I'll try to get a photo of it next time I see it.

It seems to have lost some of its "oomph" after it moved from the farm to Centralia. I guess the sponsor, whom I assume is Mr. Hamilton, must be getting old and losing some of his fighting spirit. When I drive by the farm now, it appears the house is gone. My sources tell me Hamilton originally set up the billboard to protest the division of his farm by the freeway, which cut his land in half.

The lines Trump uses always remind me of this Colbert title. Still, even this was too nuanced to fit on a hat.

You have done a Herculean job, Mr. Two Term President, look at what you have reduced the GOP to...a gang of fact and science denying thugs who have to resort to childish tantrums, babble talk and now clinging to Biblical law over real Law.

Any other country would be thanking you daily for what you have done for America since the near disaster created by the GOP and it's co-dependent corporate media, that you were left to fix.

And have, even beyond the G0P's own promises!

Your success is their nightmare.

For the next 18 months please put them out of their misery, and all of the world's misery having to out up with them.

And everyone in the room, except for the waiters and cooks and busboys, agreed.

In case you don't know waiting on tables is quite a lucrative job for the middle class. So is being a cook, and if the waiters are good to their busboys so is being a busboy.

You certainly don't need to explain anything to me since it's obvious you don't have a clue. You can cram it.

Waiting on tables is not a middle class job, even if it pays very well. It is a working class job. And, as Bernie would tell you, the working class is locked in struggle against the capitalist class. The only people who think America is winning are capitalists and the people who are fooled by them. Most waiters, busboys and cooks are not fooled. They have a working understanding of the class struggle, because they face it every day. Thus, they do not, in general, agree that America is winning economically. It simply isn't true for them.

I will consider your advice to "cram it" as an unfortunate outburst of anger based on your lack of understanding.

Have a great day!

One thing I can care less about what even our own president boasts. America is no greater that half the countries of this world. It never has been.
