Chrissie Hynde Attacks Lewd Pop Stars Branding Them 'Sex Workers' Who Created 'Porn Culture'

Source: BBC/ London Daily Mail 05:12 EST, 9 September 2015

Chrissie Hynde waded into another contentious area – the overly sexualised nature of modern pop music. In an obvious reference to scantily-clad stars such as Miley Cyrus, the former Pretenders lead singer branded them ‘sex workers’ for selling music by ‘bumping and grinding’ in their underwear. The 64-year-old also accused them of doing ‘a great deal of damage’ to women with their risque performances.
Miss Hynde launched the scathing attack during a tense interview on the BBC’s Woman’s Hour yesterday. She suggested that today’s provocatively-dressed stars are sending the wrong message about how people should view sex. Miss Hynde added: ‘I don’t think sexual assault is a gender issue as such, I think it’s very much it’s all around us now.
‘It’s provoked by this pornography culture, it’s provoked by pop stars who call themselves feminists. Maybe they’re feminists on behalf of prostitutes – but they are no feminists on behalf of music, if they are selling their music by bumping and grinding and wearing their underwear in videos.
‘That’s a kind of feminism – but, you know, you’re a sex worker is what you are. Miss Hynde, who moved to England in 1973, also said she regrets her hard partying ways and how they damaged her relationship with her parents. The singer has given up drugs, alcohol and cigarettes and now embraces a clean-living lifestyle.

I've noticed that men are now sexualized to about the same degree as women were when I as growing up. The type of hyper-sexuality being marketed today is exceedingly aggressive. It's another aspect of abuse culture where sexual abuse is mainstreamed and normalized to dehumanize us and promote an abusive economic system.

And she's been around for quite some time already, I'd hardly say she's a flash in the pan.

Some of her songs that I know because I have teenage children (But I have to say I like her music too and I'm 40)

See you again
Party in the USA
Start all over
Can't be tamed
We can't stop
The climb
Fly on the wall
7 things
Wrecking ball

She's had a ton that have been popular. Also, look up some of her stuff on You tube, as someone pointed out, the "Backyard sessions" are really good.

I may not really care for the way she dresses at times (and I hate that tongue thing, makes me want to puke) but hey, I'm getting older. My parents thought the same thing when I was a teen, that all the music groups I liked were 'disgusting'. LOL. Miley Cyrus is also quite the philanthropist and gay rights activist. From what I see older people vastly underestimate her talent and power. Anyhow I'd rather see Miley Cyrus on tv (with her ass hanging out and sticking out her tongue even), than see the Duggars on their show playing violin any day.

junk. It's not appropriate for children at all. She loves Heart and bands like that.
One time she looked at a magazine cover at a scantily clad model (it was Glamour, or something) and she said, "she's so beautiful." So I found a picture of that same woman wearing sweats, and no make up. One 5 minute video showing the hours of work that goes into a photo shoot like that, and she was back down to earth, not worshipping models.
Miley and Rhiannan are not good role models for children.

Wed Sep 9, 2015, 08:56 AM
Sep 2015

I mean, do people listen to music on the radio anymore?

or streaming?

Or are we all just watching music videos on MTV where they undulate to generate interest?

I get what she's saying but at the same point it's not like you see this everywhere. It's mostly just there if you actually look for it. It's not like Miley is wearing nothing on every cover on the supermarket rack or Rhianna either.

It's on the tabloid shows that you see this and at things like the awards shows.

Once a year you might get a provacative music video out of them.

Good to know that she thinks that they're just being feminists for prostitutes and sex workers. All her statements do is say a lot about her. But if she's one that found herself after going through the hell of drugs and is going off on this, it's just lecturing and holier than though crap.

As much as you hear about Miley's provocative nature, do we hear that she's snorting coke constantly? Or with Rhianna?

But no, show some tits and ass, shake 'em on the screen once in awhile, and you're doing it wrong.

The better way to judge is to just to actually listen to the music separate from the marketing. Separate from the artist as well in a lot of cases. And then tell me whether the music works or not.

Hell, listening to the bulk of music from most of the 70's and 80's is just terrible these days across the board. I skim through regularly on the dedicated channels on XM on the off chance of hearing a tune that I like out of nostalgia, but that's just damn rare.

Pornography and abuse are intricately linked. Pornography is used in a large percentage of rapes. Pornography is used to initiate child sex workers. The average age of debut of sex service workers is 15 years old. Half of all sex service workers are children. Sex servicing disproportionately impacts those most vulnerable in society including ethnic minorities, the economically vulnerable, youth and children.

When a 'singer/vocal artist' Katy Perry (who is a non-artist who also can't sing) squirts faux breast milk on stage at a concert, you know a singer is known less for talent and more for stunts.

Are these celebrities harmful to women generally? I don't see how that argument works. These aren't government authorities; they aren't sex workers, either, but I think you could argue that they are undisciplined showgirls who flash their private parts in order to titillate and, more importantly, distract from their artistic shortcomings.
