Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton on Wednesday called for action to end gun violence in the wake of a shooting that left two journalists dead in Virginia.
Clinton tweeted:

Heartbroken and angry. We must act to stop gun violence, and we cannot wait any longer. Praying for the victims' families in Virginia. -H
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a fellow Democratic candidate, tweeted that the shooting was "senseless" and said his thoughts were with the local TV station.

Our 'leaders' in congress would prefer to put their heads in the sand.
Thank you Hillary

(32,074 posts)As usual with Clinton she offers no specifics. What specific action does she propose that would have prevented the Virginia shooting?

(70,299 posts)as you know. This horrible shooting just happened today.

(17,663 posts)who is expecting Clinton to be 100X BETTER than the other people in the race!
I guess that's what it comes down to...a prejudicial standard from the "progressives" who sound as rigid as the right wing ...
Screw this crap!

(32,074 posts)That way others project their own views on her and they think she is going to do what they want. I would like someone who favors "gun control" to say what specific law would have prevented the Virginia shooting.
Gloria
(17,663 posts)False standard.
Checking people's background for past violence or mental health issues before getting a gun makes sense...

(32,074 posts)You are projecting. Did the Virginia shooter have issues that were documented?

(32,074 posts)I asked what specific law would have prevented the Virginia shooting. The poster says "background check" He went through a background check. And then you say that is moving goalposts. Yeah, I have noticed bringing facts to a discussion will get that response from you.

(36,063 posts)Controlling guns is a euphemism that eliminates the people we really fear.
What we -must- admit is w want to control who can have guns but that identifying who should be kept from guns isn't simple.
It all seems quite easy post hoc; our vision looking back always seems to be 20/20.
But it's not nearly so easy prospectively. And security always comes at the cost of someone's liberty.
Sometimes the cost of liberty includes unjustified discrimination.
How do we avoid that while protecting others?

(5,751 posts)The RW fans the flames of hatred toward just about everyone except white republicans. The RW media acts as a concentrator and tells the RWNJs WHO is "the problem" and who to thus HATE.
People of all walks of like are under more pressure today than ever before in their lifetimes, and some people are not emotionally or intellectually capable of handling a society with so many lies and so much hatred. None of us are, but some people snap....
A background check is not going to tell you that someone is about to snap, especially if he/she has never seen a doctor about any mental issues.
The only real lasting solution is to bring our society back to logic, and reason. In order to do that, SOMETHING needs to be done about the loudest haters with the longest reach - FAUX News.

And even if there were a diagnosis which dealt with disgruntled employees that 'go Postal', most Americans don't seek treatment for mental illness unless it is a disorder that significantly disrupts their daily activities.
People who go postal are generally pretty high functioning...until they go postal.
If we had universal health care that included mental health, and if Americans didn't avoid mental health care-because a mental illness label REALLY can ruin a persons life-we might actually move toward a system where an employer and their HR could help an employee get to treatment.
As it is 80% of persons with mental illness in the US do not seek help.
So, psychology has short-comings, healthcare funding has short-comings, and Americans come up short in help seeking for mental disorders
YET, pretty much everyone desires to make a mass-killer look 'not like me', including people with mental disorders and people who advocate for the mentally disordered.
America has a -cultural- problem with violence. IMO, it is absolutely no accident that the nation with the greatest problem with gun deaths is also the nation whose police shoot the most citizens and the nation with the largest military in the world.
These things are not independent.
They all are rooted in the way Americans learn to deal with adversity at a personal, social, and international levels. THAT is not a gun problem. THAT is not a mental illness problem.
THAT is a problem with the way Americans ARE.

(5,751 posts)You can't live long in a society like ours (there are no others) and not have your mind a bit twisted by the unending effects of the society, and the high-wire act of trying be a constructive part of it.
You are very well informed. You hit on the fact that because of stigma most people won't get help unless it affects their livelihood, or their very lives. To sum it all up, it's going to be hard to isolate these people before they exit reality. That's why I think you need to fix the society itself. Thanks to right-wing media whores, that will be difficult as well.
THAT is a problem with the way America IS.

(7,358 posts)This is just what a Presidential candidate is expected to say. And like fools we sit here and say ''yeah, yeah, yeah''.
Not one candidate on either side has said how they would put an end to this killing madness by police, and mentally crazed citizens. I hope someone during these so-called debates sticks it to them on this issue. What's the plan?

The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado,[2][3] an unincorporated area of Jefferson County in the state of Colorado. In addition to the shootings, the complex and highly planned attack involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the cafeteria, 99 explosive devices, and bombs rigged in cars. The perpetrators, two senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered a total of 12 students and one teacher. They injured 21 additional people, with three others being injured while attempting to escape the school. The pair then committed suicide.[4][5]

(58,724 posts)Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton challenged the nation Thursday to take new actions to curb gun violence in her first reactions to the shooting inside a historically black Charleston, S.C., church that left nine dead.
How many people do we need to see cut down before we act? she asked, during a summit of elected and appointed Latino politicians meeting in Las Vegas.

"In order to make sense of it, we have to be honest. We have to face hard truths about race, violence, guns and division," she said.

Hillary Clinton, Scott Walker offer different outlooks on shooting tragedy
http://political-heat.blogspot.com/2015/08/hillary-clinton-scott-walker-offer.html
......................Less than an hour after he made the tweet above, Scott Walker took the time to troll Clinton on Twitter. What did Hillary Clinton do with the rest of her day?
She renewed her pledge from earlier in the day in a speech on the campaign trail, coming out strongly for balancing gun rights with reasonable laws that can work to prevent future tragedies.
Kind of tells you little a bit about their priorities, dont you think?

Hillary Clinton Pledges to Take on Gun Violence
Aug 26 2015, 3:48 pm ET
by Andrew Rafferty
Hillary Clinton said mass shootings are "stalking our country" and pledged to take on the issue of gun control Wednesday after a reporter and cameraman were fatally shot on live television in Virginia.
"We have got to do something about gun violence in America. And I will take it on," Clinton told reporters after a campaign stop in Iowa.
Clinton and many of her other 2016 presidential opponents took to Twitter to express sympathy ............But the Democratic presidential frontrunner also added that the country "cannot wait any longer" to stop gun violence.
"I want to reiterate how important it is to not let yet another terrible instance go by without trying to do something more to prevent this incredible killing that is stalking our country," Clinton said.................
"There is so much evidence that if guns were not so readily available, if we had universal background checks...maybe we could prevent this kind of carnage," Clinton., ...................
