Louisiana trooper shot in head, critically injured during traffic stop
Source: AP
LAKE CHARLES, La. A Louisiana state trooper was shot in the head and critically injured Sunday when he tried to stop a driver suspected of being drunk or drugged in southwest Louisiana, Louisiana State Police said.
Other drivers stopped the alleged gunman and helped the officer until paramedics arrived, Col. Michael D. Edmonson, head of state police, said in a message on the department's Facebook page.
The message's subject line was "Trooper Critically Injured Prayers Needed."
Capt. Doug Cain, a state police spokesman, confirmed that the officer, whose name was not immediately released, was shot in the head.

(6,592 posts)Even with the current discussion about police misconduct, I never forget that part of their job is to walk up to people while bearing bad news.
Best hopes and wishes to him and his family.

(23,946 posts)of more guns in America than American hands to fire them?
I can not imagine a police force or any group for that matter, more terrorized than American police forces having to think constantly if the civilian/stranger they have detained or are engaged with has one of those instant killing and maiming weapons nearby....odds are in America there probably is.

(54,770 posts)guns and gun fanciers.
The police are paranoid of guns (doesn't excuse shooting obviously unarmed suspects once it's clear they are unarmed) , the majority of citizens who don't worship gunz are concerned, and gun fanciers don't care as long as they have their guns.

(53,661 posts)People want to have some 'peace officers' to keep the peace, not a war zone that was created by stochastic terrorists. And the fallout is on unarmed people, most of them minorities, from paranoid cops.

(18,655 posts)In everyone's pants; in fact I strongly reccomend against it.
But in both cases I listed, the victim 'appeared' to be armed. That meets your standard as they were not 'obviously unarmed'
In the matter of John Crawford lll's death the police responded to a caller claiming he was threatening people with a gun. You do recall, and may have suggested, that people call the police every time they see a gun. It is further suggested to be sure and say you are 'threatened' to ensure police respond "with extreme prejudice".

(54,770 posts)for so-called "responsible, lucid, law-abiding" citizens to carry a gun in public.
If you guys would stop buying the darn things; supporting the NRA or other gun promoting organizations, directly or indirectly; carrying them in public, claiming to be doing it for protection, etc., these tragedies would occur a lot less.
sarisataka
(18,655 posts)based on the fact they have a reasonable belief to be in fear for their lives that suspects may be armed. And if a person is shot while holding a BB gun in Walmart it is because they were not a "responsible, lucid, law-abiding" citizen. People around them acted prudently.
That is ok, you are entitled to your opinion. We do not have to agree.
I haven't bought a gun in years though my daughter wants to go squirrel hunting. I am considering an air rifle- I'll pop over to Outdoor Life and see if anyone has recommendations. As for carry, it is part of my job; though if we should pass on the street you would never know I was armed.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)one. Nor should you or anyone else be allowed to carry a gun on city streets. Nor should you be able to buy a bunch of gunz, adding to the gun pollution in our society. We need to pass laws like Australia so that 20, 50, or 100 years from now, we can be like England -- few guns and a lot of police not even carrying them.
sarisataka
(18,655 posts)but shoot because they fear the suspect is armed- those are mutually exclusive. If they have a reasonable fear then acting on that fear is reasonable.
No one carries- that would include police. Now if only we could get criminals on board... 20, 50, 100 years is a lot of unarmed victims, per CDC:

(54,770 posts)feel as potent without a gun in their pants, but that's just too bad.
So a gun is used in self-defense several millions more times than 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms. Sounds like a lot of gun guys are using their guns for intimidation when they really don't have to, or just making up BS about them using their guns to defend themselves. I think you and others have misinterpreted the supposed stats. I wonder how often people who strap a gun on before walking down the street, misinterpret someone's actions/intent and pull a gun.
I just don't believe having armed citizens walking around in public; armed racist militias; dads buying their kids air rifles with names like "Sniper rifle," "Tactical Rifle," "big cat," "Impact," "Stealth," "Steel Force Full Auto;" little kids finding dad's gun and shooting themselves or a friend; dads shooting mom; and the like, is worth the tragedies, or is the best way to help a youngster in a civilized society.

(18,655 posts)it's their report, not mine.
I'd be happy to buy a "Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun" but it does not have enough power to ensure a humane kill. (That's assuming we actually shoot a gun and not just a camera at the squirrel. I have to admit I am not the "best" hunter in the woods.)

(2,807 posts)The gun "fanciers" carry some of the blame for every one of these events. It is their ridiculous insistence upon stopping any further legislation that would help put an end to this unnecessary access to weapons that are just too damn powerful and too easy for a kook or lunatic to get.
Keep it up.

Police: Louisiana trooper dies after being shot in head
(Shooter)
NEW ORLEANS (AP) A veteran Louisiana State Police trooper has died of a head wound suffered while he tried to help a stranded motorist.
Col. Mike Edmonson, head of the Louisiana State Police, says 43-year-old Senior Trooper Steven Vincent died Monday at a hospital in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Edmonson says Vincent was shot by a man whose pickup truck was stuck sideways in a ditch.
Edmonson says 54-year-old Kevin Daigle of Lake Charles has been arrested. Daigle faces charges including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
Daigle was wrestled to the ground by other motorists who saw the fallen policeman.
Edmonson says Vincent was a 13-year Louisiana State Police veteran who was married and has a nine-year-old son.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) A man accused of shooting a state trooper with a sawed-off shotgun told him afterward, Youre lucky youre going to die soon, according to the head of Louisiana State Police.
Senior Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, was fighting for his life after being shot in the head by a man whose pickup truck was stuck sideways in a ditch, Col. Mike Edmonson said Sunday night. His brain is not telling his body what to do, Edmonson said.
Edmonson said Kevin Daigle, 54, of Lake Charles, was under arrest at a hospital where he was taken after other motorists saw the fallen policeman and wrestled Daigle to the ground.
Police video showed Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran in southwest Louisiana and member of a law enforcement family, very professionally trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch, Edmonson said during a news conference.
He said the truck door opened and Daigle came out with the shotgun.
That shotgun wasnt to do anything else but hurt someone. Kill someone, Edmonson said.
He said the tape shows the shotgun blast. I saw my trooper go backwards and back toward his unit, where he was going to try to get some help out there, Edmonson said.
After the shooting, he said, Daigle wandered into the road and over to Vincent, asking if he was alive.
You could hear him breathing, telling him, Youre lucky. Youre lucky youre going to die soon. Thats the words that came out of his mouth, Edmonson said.
He said two or three drivers stopped immediately, one of them spinning around on the two-lane highway.
That driver wrestled the shotgun away from Daigle, and, with the others, got him to the ground, and snapped Vincents handcuffs on his wrists, Edmonson said. As far as he knew, he said, the good Samaritans were unhurt.
Edmonson said Daigle had numerous DWIs and other arrests that he wouldnt discuss because he didnt know whether they resulted in convictions. Daigle faces charges including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Edmonson said.
