CEO in red light camera scandal pleads guilty to bribery scheme

Source: Chicago Tribune

The former CEO of Chicago's fired red light camera vendor pleaded guilty Thursday to helping orchestrate a decadelong $2 million bribery scheme to win and grow the largest automated traffic enforcement program in the nation.

"Guilty, your honor," Karen Finley, 55, answered in a firm voice when she was asked how she pleaded to one count of bribery conspiracy.

The charge carries a maximum of five years in prison, but Finley also faces sentencing in a separate bribery scheme in Ohio in which her former company, Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., made campaign contributions to elected public officials in Columbus and Cincinnati in return for keeping red light camera contracts, court records show.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall said whatever sentence she imposes would run concurrent to the term handed down in the Ohio case. Finley's sentencing was postponed until after the January trial of co-defendant John Bills, a former city transportation manager.

.

Town after town started putting them up, many with hidden signs, some streets with a half-dozen cameras per mile.

There wouldn't be any points, but it was around $90 a shot to get one. So many rear-end accidents.

These people should be put on the hook for causing a lot of intersectional accidents.

Finally, Christie did the right thing and made them illegal in the state after much clamor. I'm not sure how they got started, or if the insurance industry had a say in removing them, but it should be investigated.

a sunset provision. After 3 years, the legislation would be reviewed and renewed if warranted. There was so much outcry from the public that the permanent renewal was not passed. It did not need The Hamburgler's intervention.

They call it a municipal offense so they get to keep the cash.

Every little township board shithead gets his or her taste. Everybody expects to have to pay.

This is not a functioning democracy.
