Scores of Giant Fires Threaten to Overwhelm Western Crews

Thousands of firefighters struggled to hold their own Wednesday against more than 100 wildfires burning more than 1.1 million acres in the West, and hot dry weather won't make things any easier for the foreseeable future.
The biggest fire was the Soda fire straddling eastern Oregon and western Idaho. It was burning more than 280,000 acres Wednesday but was reported 95 percent contained, and crews were starting mop-up duty.
Three separate multi-fire complexes were scorching more than 163,000 acres in and around Shasta-Trinity National Forest in Northern California, the state and federal joint incident command said Wednesday on the third straight day of 100-degree-plus temperatures and very low humidity.
The 45,477-acre River Complex near Denny in Trinity County remained only 18 percent contained Wednesday, commanders said. The towns of Daily Ranch, Bell Flat, Hoboken and Quinby, in addition to Denny, were under mandatory evacuation orders.

(8,839 posts)This website lists all active fires. The link below is for California (Region 5). To get fires for Oregon and Washington (Region 6) replace the 5 with 6. For Idaho and Montana (Region 4) replace 5 with 4. edit This is wrong.
The numbers refer to State not USFS Region -- see pull down menu. Thanks to JimDandy in another thread.
I live in the Klamath River canyon and the air has been smoke-filled for weeks and I would expect the fires to last until significant rain. The landscape is very mountainous and heavily forested. The smoke and generally poor access limit fire-fighting efforts. Seven of the fires below on the first page for California are within 75 miles of my location as the crow flies.
The fires designated complex are smaller fires that have burned or are expected to burn together. These fires get quite large.

(36,281 posts)...although we seem to be getting something of a break today, with cool temperatures and overcast skies (zero probability of rain, though). Denny is so close that it's our go-to place to camp in the coast range when we only have the weekend-- not now though. Even without the mandatory evac, the air quality is so bad that it's hazardous to breathe up there. I've got ash all over my truck from previous days' smoke and ash fall.
