Chelsea Manning spared solitary confinement in contraband case
Source: The Sun Daily
Chelsea Manning, the transgender US soldier serving a 35-year sentence for a notorious intelligence leak, said Tuesday she is temporarily barred from recreational activities for possessing contraband items and for "disorderly conduct."
Manning, whose birth name is Bradley, had faced solitary confinement for the four offences that were weighed by a disciplinary board at Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas.
Manning said on Twitter she could not use the gym, library or go outdoors for three weeks after the board found her guilty.
Additionally, the punishment means Manning could spend more time in the high-security prison, as it represents a strike against her good-behaviour record.

(9,951 posts)Military prisons are notorious for keeping order and not allowing any infractions, they're usually much stricter than civilian prisons.
When was the last time you heard of a riot at a US military prison?

(135,425 posts)It's strict, you have to be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there, but compared to a federal prison it is paradise, and the food is entirely acceptable.
The inmates learn quickly to just keep things easy, to not get too excited or to cause kerfluffles. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. There is a pecking order and it's best to just find your place in the line.
I know that Manning is on hormones now. I am not an expert on this process, but I have heard/read/'seen on TV' that sometimes it takes awhile to get the dosage right, and that adjustments in the medication protocol are not uncommon. I have to wonder if that didn't play a role in her difficulties with the guard. Perhaps she might be able to appeal the black mark on her record.
