Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper drinks Animas River water -- story behind photo
Source: KMGH 7News Denver
Colorado governor John Hickenlooper drank water from the Animas River Wednesday to hopefully change perceptions about the water after the EPA spilled three million gallons of contaminated water from a nearby mine.
However, the Durango Herald reports that before the governor drank the water, he did add an iodine tablet to purify the water.
Iodine tablets are used to kill giardia and E. coli, but would not change any contamination from the mine spill.
On August 5, workers with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) triggered a breach at the Gold King Mine outside Silverton in San Juan County.
