At Fischer event, transportation secretary says Congress realizes U.S. needs more than temporary fix

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx put a hopeful spin Wednesday on Congress’ repeated failure to pass a federal roads funding bill.

Even congressional representatives, he said, realize that six years worth of short-term funding patches have been damaging and unsustainable.

“The good news, I think, is we are close to rock bottom,” Foxx said. “I think we’ve got a moment here where something bigger can happen.”

The secretary offered his thoughts on roads funding, drone regulation and other transportation issues during a roundtable in Lincoln with Nebraska transportation leaders.

The funding problem is much older than six years. We have been spending money on wars the last decade and a half (almost) instead of rebuilding infrastructure which would lead to well paying jobs.
