In Nevada, Jeb Bush rally interrupted by Black Lives Matter demonstrators
Source: Los Angeles Times
NORTH LAS VEGAS -- A Jeb Bush town hall Wednesday ended on a testy note, as Black Lives Matter protesters clashed with the presidential candidates' supporters after he faced a series of challenging questions.
Bush, responding to a woman's query about the disproportionate number of minorities killed by police and their treatment in the criminal justice system, said there was no question that racism still existed in the United States and that leaders needed to engage in communities that felt disenfranchised. He then turned to his education record as Florida's governor, raising achievement scores among minority youth.
I have a record of empowering people in communities that were told they had no chance, Bush said, ending the town hall. He did not deliver a closing statement, as he typically does, and quickly made his way to an exit, greeting supporters along the way.
Behind him, a few dozen protesters raised their fists and began chanting Black Lives Matter! A handful of Bush supporters turned toward them and chanted All Lives Matter! and White Lives Matter! Two women -- a protester and a Bush supporter -- stood a few feet from the candidate with their middle fingers extended in each other's faces.

Let's start with that! Until we are starting with this historical fact and move forward to the violence onto our community by ALL PEOPLE (Caucasian and Otherwise) including Shades of Brown People on other Shades of Brown People sadly.....this 15 minutes of attention seeking interrupting BS is NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM!

(135,425 posts)I have to admit, I find the reactions to these protesters a bit funny--the absolute OUTRAGE that someone would interrupt a favorite, like they're farting before the king!
Maybe now people will start to realize that #BLM really DON'T give a hoot about electoral politics--they just want the issues at the forefront of the national debate, they want the issues included in political platforms, and they're going to keep calling attention to the dead kids being murdered by law enforcement and yay-hoos with guns and attitudes until the conversation comes around to these concerns. If they want them to "GET OFF!" and "SHUT UP!!!" they'd do well to give them what they want--a national conversation and concrete plans of action.
Is there video of this event? I'd love to see it...!

(12,655 posts)you did 't say this, but some might. bernie was not one of the ones who complained about the protest, even at his own event. he continued to highlight his position on racial and economic equality.

....Bush's appearance at Pearson Community Center in North Las Vegas, where he addressed a crowd of about 150 people, didn't go unnoticed by Clinton's campaign, which sent out a statement criticizing Bush for curtailing early voting rights in Florida.
"It is ironic that Jeb Bush chose to host a town hall at an early vote polling place as he shut down similar locations in Florida," the statement said. "As governor, Jeb Bush signed into law legislation limiting early voting hours and eliminating sites like Pearson as early vote sites because they did not meet overly restrictive location requirements."

(14,881 posts)They allowed Bush to speak, versus grabbing the microphone and shutting down the event.
They chanted "Black Lives Matter," versus screaming "You're a White Supremacist"
They protested somebody whose policies need to be stopped and reversed.
They got their message across in a way that the audience could potentially be open to.
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)It was suggested to me that the actual audience for the Seattle protest was not the same audience that was AT the Seattle event, that the target audience for the performance in Seattle was folks out on social media who would enjoy seeing the 'liberal crowd' being called white supremacists. Which casts that protest in a different light, since the effectiveness would not be judged by how the audience present responded, but by how the online audience reacted. At the Bush protest, the intended audience might actually have been the audience present.

(4,458 posts)in thinking about this movement.
I have been shocked. I have "heard" the urgency in the protesters voices. I have been humbled by what I Did not know was-nay; Is happening. I am learning. I was indignant over the way the protesters treated Bernie, O'Malley et al.
I have listened to others criticisms and have voiced my own.
I was wrong.
In my opinion:
Tell me how anyone, but especially Black Lives....is Supposed to get Anyone to LISTEN when an entire race(s) of People have been Brutalized, Oppressed and all that Ignored, told to wait-we care..but not Now, when the laws rules and policies of a Nation are designed to create division, poverty and constant crises? What the hell right do WE have to criticize when I'd be willing to bet if the Shoe was on the Other foot (white privilege) we would likely do the Same thing?
Democracy IS Noisy. It can and Must be Disruptive at times when ALL else is Failed. When people are made uncomfortable...I know I Listen.
Sometimes we, ourselves are oblivious to all that going on all around us.
Do I like it? It doesn't Matter. This isn't about My likes/dislikes. This is a response to Hundreds of Years of Systemic, Legalized Murder, Torture and Oppression of Our Fellow Americans. Our friends. Our families. I am deeply troubled it Had to come to this..over and over and over again throughout our history. Because it is a signal, we Never learn from our own terrible errors.
It's time we grow up. Our help is needed. Can we please respond with understanding and less judgment?
There is a solution. We all work together. Together we Stand because Black. Lives. Matter. As much as yours and mine.
I support this movement as contentious as it is.
Imo-We must Stop shaking our heads, stop being so damned judgmental and grab a sign, don a t-shirt, pick up the phone, get involved in your town/city government..make sure policies, laws, rules treat all equally. Work toward police and justice reform from the bottom up. Become a part of the solution and Recognize when we are being Intentionally Divided for Political gain. Remember always: Many Hands Make a Light Load.

Thank you for being patient as I evolve. I'm trying hard to learn and it's a hard lesson when one begins to "feel the knowing" of the horrors with-in our Own country. But, all that doesn't matter and is nothing compared to Living this everyday with no relief in sight. How Loud will WE force them to get Before WE Listen?
My words this morning may reflect I have a good way to go yet-they may be a measurement of the distance I have to go in learning and understanding. I'm trying. I am working hard.

(7,745 posts)When you accept subversion of democracy/free speech as a valid political tactic, then you're going to have to deal with other people doing it back to you.
Are they going to complain when Jeb's supporters storm their meetings and shout down their leaders? Is that a valid "protest" tactic now?
