Board removes controversial Detroit teachers union president from office, expels him

DETROIT — The Executive Board of the Detroit Federation of Teachers has decided to remove Steve Conn from his role as president of the union and expel him from the union Wednesday.

Conn, who was elected to the role in January, was found guilty on charges of illegal cancellation of meetings, illegal attempts to convene special meetings and failure to preside over meetings in accordance with the bylaws; unauthorized affiliation of the DFT with By Any Means Necessary (BAMN); failure to investigate abuse of members; failure to address physical assault on a member; and failure to pay per capita dues.

"This decision is not based on anything other than evidence presented at the trial and the governing document of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, The Constitution and Bylaws," the board wrote in a letter to union members posted on the group's website.
