LINCOLN Nebraska issued 1,300 drivers licenses during the first two-plus months of a new law that ended the states controversial ban on driving by children of illegal immigrants.
The licenses were issued from May 29 through Aug. 5, said Rhonda Lahm, director of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Nebraska was the last state to withhold drivers licenses from those accepted into the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.
The program, started in 2012 by President Barack Obama, provides renewable work authorizations to immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.
DMV records show Douglas County has issued the most DACA drivers licenses with 423, followed by Lancaster (133) and Hall (123) Counties. Counties rounding out the top 10 are Adams, Platte, Colfax, Sarpy, Dawson, Dodge and Madison.
