Klobuchar backs Iran nuclear deal, Franken leans toward support as Obama courts votes

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

ST. PAUL, Minn. — U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar says she'll vote for the Iran nuclear deal.

The Minnesota Democrat threw her support behind the plan in a Monday statement. She says it's imperfect but it offers the "best available option to put the brakes on Iran's development of a nuclear weapon."

Klobuchar's support comes after a top Senate Democrat, Sen. Chuck Schumer, announced last week he'll oppose the deal. President Barack Obama needs at least 34 senators to back his plan in order to keep it in place.

Klobuchar makes for 17 Democrats in favor. Fellow Minnesota Democratic Sen. Al Franken's spokesman Michael Dale-Stein says he's strongly leaning toward supporting the deal.

My former state, Minnesota, delivering two huge votes for the good guys.

That's three Senators--two of them Jewish--who expressed support today.

Total with leaners to uphold an Obama veto is 29. Need to firm up the leaners, and add 5 more, and then we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

stop a country from building a nuclear bomb? I hear that a delegation of about 60 US Congressmen/Senators will be traveling to meet with Netanyahu for their marching orders.

They can do nothing, and the agreement is in force.

If they take action, Obama can veto that action.

If he vetos, then BOTH the House and Senate have to override, with 60%, or the agreement is in force.

All this is talk about what politicians would do if a veto override vote comes up. Talk about something that may not even happen, over a month from now, while all of Congress is on a month long vacation. A hand more senators announce and the GOP will tuck it's tail between its legs and skulk back into DC and do what they have been doing for 7 years, Jack Shit.

I think the whole thing will come down to whether or not Congress can override a veto. What happens before that is a given. Those who oppose the deal have a very tough climb. But you are right, the focus needs to be on getting Congresspeople to commit to vote yes and that they will oppose an override.
