In a reversal, Trump seeks presidential campaign donations

Source: Crain's New York Business

Donald Trump, who had originally planned to fund his presidential bid with his own money, is now accepting campaign donations.

It isn't clear what contributed to the campaign's shift in financial strategy. A spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

When he announced his candidacy in June, Mr. Trump declared: "I'm using my own money. I'm not using the lobbyists. I'm not using donors. I don't care. I'm really rich." He later pegged his net worth as greater than $10 billion, though credible outside estimates peg the figure at less than half that.

...snip...

It's possible that Mr. Trump is now raising money to demonstrate the depth of grassroots fervor for his White House quest. Poll results on Monday indicated that his support was unaffected by his performance at Thursday evening's debate. Of course, raising money from outsiders could undermine a cornerstone of Mr. Trump's candidacy: He's so rich that he's immune to the charms of any lobbyists or donors seeking to buy influence.

If I check the box when I donate, can I give him $2700 every month?

He never had the money he said he had. Ever. And whatever he has now, mostly fees from sticking his name on properties he doesn't actually own, is managed by a trust set up by the banks the last time he went bust. Just a few years ago he couldn't write a check to the electric company.

So, maybe a few campaign bills came in and have to be paid.

NetJets was one of my accounts a while back.

However, that doesn't mean it's his money-- his entire career has been playing with OPM and the jet could be paid for by his golf course investors. Or mortgaging Mar-A-Largo, if it's still worth anything.

At any rate, leverage is his middle name, and he wouldn't be the first "rich" person who was cash poor.

He submitted a 92 page personal financial report to them a few weeks ago. It is a public document and I'm sure every campaign has pored over it looking for bad stuff. If he was broke we would have heard about it long ago.

FEC reports, as I said, are audited for opposition research by all of the opposing campaigns.

he said that he had to check the boxes marked "250k and up". the FEC doesn't care if some braggart wants to overstate his assets by billions.

as for his plane, i expect one of his companies owns the plane, not him personally. heck, he may have a plane leasing company that one of his other companies leases from, so he can actually have one business profiting from the expenses of another.

The financial form (I have filled it out) is only 2 or 3 pages unless you are wealthy (which most candidates are). His was 92 pages, far more than most of the others. He had accountants fill it out. He just signed it. I doubt he even looked at it. The idea that he is broke is just silly. He may not be worth $10 billion but Forbes magazine said about $4 billion. Maybe its something in between.

Don't spending caps kick in when you accept outside donations - even on the money you spend yourself.

The only time spending caps kick in is when you accept public money for the general election campaign. However no candidate took public money in 2012 and none will take it 2016.

When you get that high, it's all paper anyway and how you appraise your real estate. I suppose I could say I am a millionaire if I think my house is worth 750 but could only really get 400K and have 250 liquid. It's all on what the real estate is really worth.

I always suspected as soon as he needed to start spending real $$ he'd either bail or do this.

He had no idea what it takes to mount a national campaign, but he's in the early stages of finding out.
