Chuck Schumer Planning To Break With Obama, Oppose Iran Deal
Last edited Fri Aug 7, 2015, 12:07 AM - Edit history (1)
Source: Huffington Post
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, the chamber's third-ranking Democrat, plans to announce his opposition to the nuclear deal negotiated by the U.S., Iran, and five world powers tomorrow, three people familiar with his thinking tell The Huffington Post.
Schumer's move will come a day after New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Schumer's fellow New York senator, Kirstin Gillibrand, announced their support for the deal. That momentum is blunted by Schumer's pending announcement. Backers of the deal had hoped that if Schumer decided to oppose the deal, he would hold off until the last minute.
Schumer's support of a war footing over diplomacy puts him at odds with the Democratic caucus he intends to lead next term, though it is consistent with the position he has long taken.
As the soon-to-be leader of his party in the Senate, Schumers decision to directly fight President Barack Obama on the biggest foreign policy achievement of his presidency is a bold, but not surprising, move. Schumer has long been more hawkish on foreign policy than some of his fellow Democrats. In 2002, he voted for the Authorization for the Use of Military Force in Iraq. In 2006 he backed John Bolton's nomination to serve as George W. Bush's ambassador to the United Nations, reportedly telling a Senate Democratic caucus meeting that "a vote against Bolton was a vote against Israel." Bolton is an ardent foe of negotiation with Iran.

Chuck Schumer is a disgrace to the state of New York. I will donate to any Democratic Senatorial candidate (general election) who pledges to not vote for this disloyal, treasonous scumbag for Majority Leader.
Fuck Chuck.

But Shumer doesn't have one which proves it is just political bribery at the highest level. Shumer's true color bleeds through and he will never live it down.

(68,868 posts)disagree, he attacks the US government on behalf of Israel.
Seriously, this a matter of empirical fact. Saudi radar plane sales, restrictions on using US loan guarantees to build illegal settlements, and now war with Iran.
There was never any doubt that he would side with Israel and try to push for another middle east war, just like he did with Bush's Iraq war.
This fucking pig was willing to trust Bush but not Obama.

(92,381 posts)If these same folks who are voting against the Iran deal also voted for the IWR, Democrat or not, they do NOT deserve our support.
They have learned nothing, and they should not be reelected.
If Schumer votes against this deal, there is no way he deserves to be majority leader, and if the DNC thinks I will contribute money to those who won't give peace a chance, and want war with Iran, they need their head examined.

(755 posts)I know that area. I know it well. Schumer should represent America. I'm not anti-Israel. I've traveled around Boro Park, Midwood, Forest Hills, and there is deep anti-Obama sentiment in some of those areas. Some of these areas. It's the swing areas of NYC. Schumer will most likely be re-elected in 2016, NYS Republican bench is weak, but Hakeem Jeffries, etc. could challenge Schumer.

The "should represent America" part referring to a Jewish senator is an anti-Semitic trope asserting "disloyalty by Jewish Americans", which DU ToS explicitly forbid. No, you don't get a pass from "I'm not anti-Israel".

Narcissist and blowhard. There is no shortage of big egos in DC, but, even by DC standards, his egotism and narcissism are over the top. Even without the latest disgrace of his vote against the Iran deal, his narcissism alone disqualifies him from serving as majority/minority leader. Schumer's biggest priority has always been himself, or, rather, himself and the nearest TV camera. To have a position of that sort, the needs of your party, and the policies and pending legislation important to that party, must be the thing that gets you up in the morning. But Schumer is all about himself.
I can't stand him either.

(18,124 posts)the POTUS has had such difficulty really governing in the last six+ years. (24,689 posts)Schumers position doesnt change our confidence that well be able to mobilize a substantial majority of Democrats, Earnest said, but suggested lawmakers should question whether Schumer is fit to become the partys leader in the Senate next term, saying members may want to consider the voting record of those who want to lead the caucus.
Senator Schumer siding with the GOP against Obama, [Hillary] Clinton and most Democrats will make it hard for him to lead the Dems in 16, Dan Pfeiffer, who served as Obamas senior political adviser until leaving in February, wrote on Twitter. The base wont support a leader who thought Obamacare was a mistake and wants War with Iran, he wrote in another tweet.

(9,688 posts)There seems to be no discipline in the Dem party. No whip.
Sure, a bit of momentary outrage and empty threats to "primary", but it seems that the pre-eminent Dem characteristic is to be forgetful, after a few weeks or months all traces of memory are gone, and even after a long string of betrayals just one well publicized vote for the Dem side near enough the election is enough to make all those forgetful Dems swoon.
So you get "Dems" like this, and like Webb, and some vague idea that this is "better than a Republican", though for the life of me I don't see how. Seems worse, to me - that the fuckers have infiltrated.
It's bloody weird.

(1,986 posts)And judging from Mr. Sanderss comments, it went well for Mr. Schumer.
Asked if he thought other Democratic senators would follow Mr. Schumer in breaking with the president on one of the most important foreign policy issues of his administration, Mr. Sanders said: Yeah, I do. I think there is, on very, very difficult votes, votes of conscience.
Its hard, he continued, saying that the current Democratic leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, and the minority whip, Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, will do their best to get a party line vote and they are often successful or 98 percent successful.
But there are votes we are sent here by our constituents and you cant go home and say, Well I really thought this an enormously important vote, I should have voted yes, but the leadership told me to vote no, so I voted no you cant do that, Mr. Sanders said.
He added: Chuck is a very smart guy and a very good senator. He and I will probably end up disagreeing on this vote."

Seen the US Military readiness stats lately, dickhead? Not so much on the "ready". Iraq and the longest-running war in US history, Afghanistan? They've kinda depleted the troop levels.
