Governor cites 'direct correlation' between disposal wells, earthquakes

"I think we've been saying all along even when there wasn't a definitive tie in the public consciousness that as long as the decisions are based on data and good science and not an overreaction, that we'll be fine," said Chad Warmington, president of the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association. "We agree with the approach."
The pace of new regulation has increased in recent months, with the Corporation Commission issuing new directives in March, July and earlier this week.
"As long as we continue to have these reasonable advances while also looking back and seeing if the other things are working, we like that approach, particularly when we take a targeted approach and don't just look at an areawide basis," Warmington said. "I think the pace of the initiatives isn't as much of a concern as what they're basing it on. Right now, we're really comfortable with what they're doing."
The council emphasized, however, that there likely will not be a quick and easy solution.
"It is important for people to understand that just because there is a change, it doesn't mean there will be no more earthquake next week," Fallin said. "It could be a year before we see a measurable difference.

(24,010 posts)Confusing OP! I had to read through all that corporatespeak on page 2, looking for the governor's statement; wasn't there, nothing related to the headline; then realized that this was page 2. So-o-o-o, went to page 1 and read what the governor said, which is:
Gov. Mary Fallin on Tuesday acknowledged a link between Oklahoma's earthquake swarm and wastewater disposal wells used by the energy industry.
"We all know now there is a direct correlation between the increase in earthquakes we've seen in Oklahoma and the disposal wells, based upon many different factors, whether it is volume or location or whether it is on a fault line, how deep that disposal well goes into the earth itself," Fallin said Tuesday.
"Oklahoma recognizes there is an earthquake problem in our state. We're trying to actively deal with it, come up with solutions and make sure they are based on scientific fact. That helps develop a response plan to address this problem and ensure that homeowners and business owners and agencies are all working together."
