Gillibrand Says She'll Support 'Imperfect' Iran Deal

Source: Albany Times Union

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will support the security agreement with Iran — officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — as agreed to by President Barack Obama and the most powerful European nations.

Gillibrand discussed her support on the post-what-thou-wilt online forum Medium, writing that while imperfect, “if we reject this deal, we do not have a viable alternative for preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.”

Gillibrand’s support for the deal comes before her senior Democratic colleague Chuck Schumer has weighed in on it. Schumer has said he is still weighing the details of the plan, which is vehemently opposed by Israel’s President Benjamin Netanyahu and the vast majority of the Republican presidential field.

This is a big, big, big vote to bring on board. She's not waiting for Chuck Schumer to announce his opposition.

Enough dems have opposed or questioned it to give the GOP's opposition some legitimacy.

In the past any dem opposing a GOP deal would have been made out to be some sort of irresponsible whacko. Unfortunately the dems have not learned that much from the GOP on these things.

It would be very easy for Dems to turn the tables on the current GOP and cast them as the irresponsible children on foreign policy like the GOP used to do, but they have not seized this opportunity.

Except Nixon was too much of a hippie to belong to today's Republican party, even though he was an authoritarian bigot and all-around rightwing asshole

in his recent speeches and comments on the Iran deal, with his characterization of hard-liners in Iran as allied with "the Republican caucus" in their opposition to this deal.
He'll be interviewed on Fareed Zakaria's "GPS" program this Sunday; he might get some more zingers in there. . he seems to be getting more pointed with every speech and interview.

We know the Republicans will.

Recent history suggests faux Democrats don't get reelected.

Schumer is going to go for the deal. Above all else, he is a loyal Democrat who wants to be in the top Senate leadership position when Reid leaves.

Pelosi has already promised the House.

Good for Senator Gillibrand!

11. A Great Summation Of The Situation By Sen. Gillibrand

This is a well reasoned document by Sen. Gillibrand that shows depth — something that has been sorely missing from the debate so far. And she closes strong when she points out “we do not have a viable alternative for preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons… Without a deal, our options will be limited to insufficient unilateral sanctions, an invasion with yet another massive and costly land war in the Middle East, or a bombing campaign that offers nothing more than short-term gain under the best-case scenario.

Our goal has been, and remains, to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. We have far more ability to achieve that outcome if we approve this deal”.

Yup, that sums it up nicely.
