While defending Republicans' effort to defund Planned Parenthood over a series of "sting" videos targeting the organization, presidential candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush doubted the $500 million or so in federal funds currently going to support health services offered at clinics is even necessary.
"You can take dollar for dollar -- though I'm not sure we need half a billion dollars for women's health issues -- but if you took dollar for dollar, there are many extraordinarily fine organizations ... to provide quality care for women on a wide variety of health issues," Bush said Tuesday, speaking at a the Southern Baptist Convention.
A Senate bill that failed to overcome a filibuster Monday would have redirected the $500 million to other women's healthcare providers such as federal community health centers. Planned Parenthood defenders argue those health centers to not have the capabilities to handle the influx of patients that would arise if Planned Parenthood could no longer use federal funds to treat women.
Former Secretary Hillary Clinton, the top Democratic 2016 candidate, has already jumped on Bush's comment.

Jeb Bush: I 'Misspoke' On Women's Health Spending Comments
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) quickly walked back earlier comments that he was "not sure we need half a billion dollars for women's health issues."
His presidential campaign posted online a statement Tuesday evening saying Bush "misspoke" with the remarks:
With regards to womens health funding broadly, I misspoke, as there are countless community health centers, rural clinics, and other womens health organizations that need to be fully funded. They provide critical services to all, but particularly low-income women who dont have the access they need.
I was referring to the hard-to-fathom $500 million in federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood an organization that was callously participating in the unthinkable practice of selling fetal organs. Democrats and Republicans agree we absolutely must defund them and redirect those funds to other womens health organizations.

(23,099 posts)Repugs are just terminally stupid and they can be because of the gazillion dollars being spent to make their opponents look scary/bad. Yeah, there are a few puff pieces about what great family people they are, but the vast majority of the Koch/Rove ads are totally lying and distoring the truth, negative hit pieces. The ads and the gerrymandering have made them feel safe to pull off the masks and show the crazy meanness.

In true "Groundhog Day" style, the mainstream media insists, again and again, that we take them seriously.

(92 posts)He only wants to take the money away from Planned Parenthood, not from women's health issues.
I love when he misspeaks, and he does it a lot.

(5,668 posts)main Titles and the rest from Medicaid and again I find it ironic PP was basically a non partisan sometimes Republican organization until a little while ago. Reminds me of immigration. And even the smartest fall for this the millions saved from such research. and even bigger irony. Fetal research is way down. Cord blood though is not. That is way up. Abortion is way down ... and they are gonna shut the government down for nothing. They aren't willing to shut down banks or big oil that donates the actualy $$ that goes toward abortion. So this has nothing to do with abortion. Defunding Planned Parenthood has zero to do with Abortion. If I get into a debate about this with old friends. what little I have. it'll go nowhere. the believe even when the facts show the video is fake. I don't need to see the video really as I grew up on this. I'm not pro abortion. But I'm no zero tolerance fan either.

That's really ticking off conservatives too, and they are demanding to know if he knew about that $50 million funding to Planned Parenthood in Africa while he was a board member at Bloomberg last year.
They are hopping mad that he 'sold them out'.
So, today, we hear his garbage mouth politics aimed at women's health issues. So typical of Jeb Bush's meanness.
.....
Bush, noting his own state defunded Planned Parenthood under his governorship, expressed support for the defund movement. But he also dodged the question as to whether the government should be shut down over Planned Parenthood funding, which some conservatives are now pushing.
"If I am President, we are going to respect the Constitution and get back to regular order way where democracy works again," he said.
.....
The current fight started after an anti-abortion group began releasing videos filmed undercover of Planned Parenthood employees discussing the costs and protocols involved in donating tissues from aborted fetuses to researchers. Abortion foes say the videos prove Planned Parenthood is illegally profiting off of tissue harvesting, a claim the organization vehemently denies.
Planned Parenthood is already legally prohibited from using federal funding -- which it receives through programs like Medicaid and Title X -- for abortion except in the case of rape, incest or life of the mother.
Update: Jeb Bush walked back the women's health spending comment in a statement saying that he "misspoke."
Jeb Bush's candidacy is a mistake.
Over at the dark side for a moment:
The Donald is waiting for Jeb to open his mouth on Thursday.

(63,912 posts)He statement is demonstrably false. PP does NOT sell fetal organs. The woman donates them of their own free will. And it is against the law to sell body parts. Period.
Surely there is legal recourse against this liar and fraud.

My newspaper (The Hartford Courant) is usually pretty balanced in their letters to the editor, but over the past week, they've been deluged with people outraged over PP harvesting babies or whatever Rush, Hannity, etc are telling them.
If you sue Bush, you can sue just about every prominent Republican in the media and in national politics.

That this guy THINKS that he's somehow "qualified" to get on the presidential debate stage and open his arrogant and privileged mouth on ANYTHING is an insult.
Floridians have known who this charlatan is for decades. He operates largely just offstage and in the shadows, but now that everyone sees this snake, it's very, very ugly.

(750 posts)It shows the media is complicit to Bush crime Inc.
This close association with doing business with the enemy during world war two was something not talked about in my k12 system or in college in the last century.
Its a curiosity that will eventually destroy mainstream media as we know it today. Moreover, it will destroy complicit Democratic and Republican persons that just sideline this very serious issue.
The Bush and Cheney family both engage in trading with the enemy, engaging in torture, and being close business partners with the Bin Laden family that are recognized as financial supporters of the very people America is fighting against in terrorism.
I blame a wide range of the Democratic Party that are likely part of the profiteering and corruption Bill Clinton has an extraordinary friendship with Bush.
