Democrats Block Vote On Planned Parenthood Defunding

Democrats Block Vote On Planned Parenthood Defunding
Republicans fell short of the 60 votes they needed to debate the legislation.

Laura Bassett, Senior Politics Reporter, The Huffington Post

Posted: 08/03/2015 06:03 PM EDT

Senate Democrats blocked a vote on a bill Monday that would have stripped federal funds from Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest family planning provider.

Republican backers of the bill needed 60 votes to advance it to the Senate floor for debate, but it fell short in a vote of 53-46. Every Democrat except Sens. Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.) voted against proceeding to debate. Sen. Mark Kirk (Ill.) was the only Republican to vote no.

Ahead of the vote, Democrats decried the bill as an ideological attack on women’s health care and abortion rights.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Republicans have “lost their moral compass” in going after an organization that provides health care and family planning services to one in five women in the U.S. “Senate Democrats will fight vigorously this and any other attempt by Republicans to deprive American women of health care,” he said.

He has tried to come off as a moderate. His alleged pro-choice stance is a flip-flop.

He signed the traitorous letter to Iran.

He spent a great deal of time recuperating from a stroke. He drew his Senate salary during that time. Yet he does not want poor people to get Obamacare or disability pay.

Tammy Duckworth is ahead of him in the polls. She would be a much better Senator.

Why?
Because we yelled and screamed when the repubs would use these blocks and "filibusters" to screw with democrat proposals.

Now democrats are doing the same damn thing.

You do realize that if they didn't 'obstruct' that the President would have vetoed it anyway? Do you really think that Democrats should just roll over on core principles just because some RW scammers got the women-haters all riled up?

The Republicans left the filibuster rules in place. They are the ones requiring 60 votes to proceed. If you have a beef with obstructionism it should be with them. They run it now.

So you would have the Democrats vote against the wishes of their constituents to "just get along"? Just what other major issues do you want to see the Democrats roll over on to make the republicans happy and allow them to show 'progress'?

14. Title X is what they want to defund and it prevents 345,000 abortions a yr
Mon Aug 3, 2015, 09:10 PM
Aug 2015

See this NYT article by Nicholas Kristof. "...This in a country where half of all pregnancies are unintended, where 30 percent of American teenage girls become pregnant by age 19.

The Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health, calculates that Title X family planning centers prevent about one million unintended pregnancies a year, of which 345,000 would have ended in abortion. It says that every year Title X clinics avert some 53,000 cases of chlamydia and 8,800 cases of gonorrhea, and save the lives of 1,100 women who would otherwise die of cervical cancer.

In other words, Title X prevents an abortion about once every 90 seconds...."
This should be shoved in the faces of all those ignorant or misinformed senators who voted to defund Planned Parenthood as they have no idea how much good this organization provides.

Most people do not know these statistics only that PP does abortion referral service and not that they prevent 345,000 abortions a year...as well as preventing the spread of disease and saving Medicaid money also by providing condoms etc.

Among Democrats, the correct form of the adjective is "Democratic." Are you sure that you mean "we" when you are talking about Dems?

This vote wasn't even in the same ballpark as typical GOPer blocks - which are generally against confirmations of Presidential appointments as well as anything that - you know - might actually help the American people have better lives. False equivalency indeed.

Defunding Planned Parenthood is a direct attack on women's reproductive rights. No less. Any Dem who fails to support those rights is no Dem - and I mean you, Manchin and you, Donnelly.

It sounds as if you, Manchin, and Donnelly are kindred spirits. At the very least.

But ....

It was expected to be used sparingly.

You had to keep talking.

Now anyone can file a paper filibuster (or whatever it is called) and require a bill to get 60 votes instead of a simple majority. I say, "You want to filibuster? Get up there and start talking!".

They are about only 1 thing and that is Wining their point at any and all costs to the rest of us. They believe we ordinary folks do not deserve to have anything at all. They are the very sanctimonious creatures Jesus tossed out of the Temple (for those who recall their bible school) and yet they claim moral imperative drives them to do this.

Never yield to them on any point. They do not acknowledge our constitution, our president or our people as sovereign. They have no sympathy or empathy for the very people who voted them into office. They daily disrespect the Oath of Office they swore when they were inducted.

The truly terrible thing about this is they know it is a political stance that has nothing to do with protecting health for women or infants. It is red meat thrown to the ravening hordes they
have courted with carefully engineered programs designed to engender fear and hatred. They only lack the jackboots, uniforms and insignia to identify their true allegiance.
