Cecil the lion: big game hunting banned in Zimbabwe as outrage grows over animal killing
Source: Mirror
Big game hunting has been BANNED in Zimbabwe following the global disgust at the slaughter of Cecil the lion by a US dentist.
Authorities in the south African country announced the move after it emerged a second American hunter is wanted for allegedly killing a different lion in April.
According to the Daily Record, bow hunting has also been suspended.
Zimbabwean officials want to extradite 55-year-old dentist Palmer from Minnesota. He is reported to have paid £32,000 to hunt and kill Cecil, one of the best known lions in Africa.

(12,655 posts)people can be compassionate about many different issues at the same time.
this "you can't be outraged over animal cruelty as long as there are injustices against humans" meme is getting tired.

(12,655 posts)on rereading, it looks like you were referring to the plight of gay people in that country.
didn t mean to kneejerk. there have been so many comments like "you can't be upset about animal cruelty because (human group) has been (injustice)." it was getting tiring.

(1,725 posts)He was also a Doctor and belonged to the Safari International club and the Boone and Crockett club. Over the years he filled our house, cellar and office with trophies. I called it the "dead zoo"as a young girl. One bear he shot was displayed in the Museum of Natural History in N.Y. because it was so large and an award winning trophy. When he passed away, he left me some trophies but gave most away to other people. (Thank Goddess.) He also "murdered" an elephant and brought home tusks and had foot stools made out of it's feet and also an cocktail tray. He had it's penis (inside bone)made into a cane. He killed a walrus and I have an "ozic" large club like bone from it's penis. I have earrings and bracelet also made from that bone and he had half of the animals mounted to display on walls. He killed a polar bear and my brother has that rug. He killed a lion and had it's testicals made into cocktail cups. He killed a tiger and a leopard (I have those mounts) and I've named them Cleo and Anthony and they are positioned in my house looking out the window to the lush backyard for them to "look" at. We love and honor them.( Doc didn't like me or cats because I didn't like his murderous hunting). He killed and had trophies mounted of a Musk Ox, kangaroo, water buffalo, seal, moose, caribou, elk, 3 zebras, an iguana, many antler bearing animals, a mountain goat and too many more to mention. As a child, I was forced to watch 16 millimeter films of the many "hunts' and how they took their skins off. I still have nightmares, especially now with these 2 other trophy hunting doctors in the news. We were forced at dinner to eat some of these animals' meat. I haven't eaten any meat in 39 years. I hope those doctors are sent to prison in Africa for a long time. I hesitated in writing all this but I needed to express my disgust for trophy hunting.

(11,348 posts)Grew up hunting and know a lot of hunters. None of them were trophy hunters, all hunted for food. None of us understood the trophy hunting. Always figured it was for people with way too much money/time on their hands who didn't have anything better to do with it.

(1,725 posts)Doc had more trophies but he never killed a giraffe....probably because our ceilings were so low. I notice the trophy wife in this picture...proud of her "man". Thank you for understanding the horror of it all.

(12,022 posts)There are game farms that raise animals who are so used to humans that they don't run when they're released. They just walk out of the cage and look at you as you shoot it. Those are the "hunts" that guarantee a trophy.

(67,111 posts)these are dangerous people and should be carefully watched. And in the big picture they should be held accountable the same as if they were actually shooting people.

I would love it if Palmer were extradited. At least one 1%er would have to face the justice system instead of using his (wife's) money to escape it.
