Doctor becomes second American named in African lion-killing investigation: Pittsburgh gynecologist

A second American has been named in a growing big game poaching investigation in Zimbabwe.
Pennsylvania Dr. Jan Seski is accused of killing a lion in April and his guides have been arrested in the African Country.
Dr. Seski has been pictured online with a series of dead animals including elephants, hippos, zebras, ostriches, and water buffalo. An online hunting club claims he has killed six elephants.
It comes a week after Africa's most famous lion Cecil was killed by Minnesota Dentist Dr. Walter Palmer in early July, sparking international outrage.
.....
Seski was involved in an illegal hunt of a lion in April around Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, said the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in a statement released to CBS.
A Zimbabwean landowner named Headman Sibanda was arrested in the case and is assisting police with their investigation, the authority said. He named Seski as being involved in the hunt.
Dr. Seski is listed as being Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

I hope his life is ruined and he goes to jail. It won't bring the dead animals back but maybe global awareness and outrage is now really kicking in and things will change.

(14,881 posts)Pittsburgh Oncology Practice Pleads Guilty to Buying Unapproved Foreign Drugs
United States Attorney Laura E. Duffy announced today that Jan C. Seski, M.D. & Associates, P.C., an oncology practice based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to a criminal charge of having caused the introduction of an unapproved drug into interstate commerce and was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. Magistrate Judge Karen S. Crawford also ordered the defendant to place ads in two medical journals, warning of the dangers of unapproved drugs.
In pleading guilty earlier today before Judge Crawford, the medical practice admitted that between December 4, 2008 and May 25, 2011, the practice ordered $973,795 worth of foreign versions of the oncology drugs Eloxatin7, Gemzar7, and Taxotere7 from GlobalRxStore.com and had them shipped through Oberlin Medical Supply of San Diego. The drugs ordered by the practice were determined to be foreign versions of these drugs and were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States.

(4,555 posts)In this specific case regarding the foreign version of chemotherapy drugs, he might have been trying to get a more reasonably priced version of drugs that are astronomically expensive here in the US. Hopefully he was passing the savings on to the patients. But, maybe not. In any event, Americans are charged more for some drugs than the exact same drugs over in other countries and that is not right.
again, I am not condoning breaking the law, but big Pharma in the US is fleecing the American public and the FDA makes it legal because they don't approve equally effective, but more cost-effective versions of a drug for use in the US.
outside of that, this GYN is just as bad as the DDS. Very hypocritical human beings.

(14,881 posts)unless he passed that discount on to his patients, he was profiting from it. Maybe another way to fund his $50K killing sprees.

Two doctors have admitted knowingly buying the foreign drugs. One of them, a Pennsylvania oncologist whose practice purchased nearly $1 million worth of the misbranded drugs, was recently fined $100,000 and ordered to place ads in two medical journals warning of the dangers of unapproved drugs (see sidebar).
Here issome of the ad he was required to place (bf mine):
"Do not put your patients, yourself or your practice at risk by purchasing and administering unapproved foreign-sourced drugs. Most of the drugs from foreign sources have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and may include misbranded, adulterated and counterfeit versions of FDA-approved drugs. They may not be of suitable quality to ensure safety or efficacy.

(12,655 posts)clearly these doctors are not being taxed enough. We've got to get a higher tax bracket on the disgustingly wealthy, then at least with just what little money they might have left get a small sailboat instead of killing beautiful innocent creatures.

These animals deserve so much more than to be mercilessly hunted by the likes of Walter Palmer and himself, for the sole reason of feeding his ego and adorning the walls in his shrine of horrors, like Walter Palmer's.

Dr. Seski is a gynecologic oncologist who is also a respected national leader in bloodless medicine and surgery. He developed an interest in bloodless surgery while a faculty member at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the late 1970s. Along with his colleagues there, Dr. Seski pioneered a hemodilution technique that enabled them to successfully operate on patients who did not accept blood transfusions.
I would think the Allegheny Health Network might look for another medical director.

Im also getting REALLY sick of people coming up with this but you dont get this outraged when x happens... with the ever-dwindling animal population and the ever-increasing numbers of humans, we must voice our outrage because THEY CANT.

(135,425 posts)He didn't know any better, and that bloodthirstiness is a stain on his legacy today.
When you watched the Three Stooges, they would do riffs and schticks about the "Great White Hunter," who would shoot animals and put the skins on the floor and the heads on the wall. I grew up seeing that shit in the movies.
That said, after awhile, people came to the conclusion that there aren't many societies where doing this is necessary, useful, humane, sensible--a few remote tribes, for clothing, food, tools, etc., but not for people living in civilized society. Fake fur became more popular than regular fur. Photo safaris were how you went "hunting."
What POSSESSES these supposed healers to want to get their jollies hunting and killing shit for sport? It's a perverse thing. Why are they both in the medical profession? Is it a quirk in that gig, or something? I am so tired of looking at orafices, I just have to KILL SOMETHING!!!!!!!
What is the motivation? I just do. not. understand.

I'm not sure what they think other people think when they show off their kill photos. Me, major disgust.
And I come from a family of hunters, hunters who put meat on the table and didn't let the wounded suffer 40 hours. I don't think my uncles and cousins would recognize these guys as hunters. I hope not, anyway.
