Major Environmental Group Endorses Bernie Sanders' 2016 Bid
Source: National Journal
The first national green group to make an endorsement in the 2016 election just threw its weight behind Bernie Sanders.
Announced Saturday afternoon in New Hampshire, the endorsement from Friends of the Earth Action arrives amid rising frustration from the environmental Left over Hillary Clinton's refusal to take a stand on the Keystone XL pipeline and a host of other hot-button issues such as drilling in icy Arctic waters.
"We're seeing a lot of speeches from candidates, but Bernie has an incredibly strong track record and there's a lot of credibility there. He's also willing to say 'no' where some other candidates aren't," Erich Pica, the president of Friends of the Earth Action, said in an interview.
Many environmentalists fear that Clinton's cozy relationship with Wall Street and silence on some environmental issues may be a sign that she won't go far enough at a time when aggressive action is needed to stem the tide of global warming. And they see Sanders as a more-steadfast environmental champion.

(27,509 posts)Sanders wins support of environmental group that sees Clinton equivocating
By John Wagner August 1 at 3:00 PM
Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, who has built his campaign largely on economic issues, picked up an endorsement Saturday from a national environmental group during a swing through New Hampshire.
The political arm of Friends of the Earth, which bills itself as the world's largest grass-roots environmental network, threw its support behind the senator from Vermont at an event in Concord and then joined him at a town-hall meeting in Manchester.
This was the first formal endorsement by a national group of Sanders's bid for the Democratic nomination, and the organization's rationale mirrors that of other progressives drawn to his candidacy.
Sanders is more solid than Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton on issues the group cares about, said Erich Pica, president of Friends of the Earth. And, he added in a phone interview, while former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley -- who recently put forth a comprehensive white paper on climate change -- is an "intriguing" candidate, Friends of the Earth has a long-standing relationship with Sanders.

We should incentivize production of clean energyit's better for our environment & consumers.

"Thus far, no other candidate has said they're going to make climate change their top priority.
Martin O'Malley has not only done that, but he has outlined a plan that would enact emissions reductions in line with what scientists say is necessary to slow global climate changeworldwide emissions reductions of 40-70 percent by 2050and he's the only candidate to do that, too. His plan would phase out fossil-fueled power plants altogether, by midcentury. Along with the USA Today op-ed, he released a white paper further outlining his scheme."

from Martin O'Malley, on energy independence
Today I visited Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy in Council Bluffs. We discussed the products and processes around refining ethanol, and the importance of becoming truly energy independent. The CEO said to me, "These are steady jobs, and for our area some of the best jobs. That's important for new generations."
I agree. We have to accelerate a transition right now to renewable energy sources and create jobs for a renewable energy future.

Martin O'Malley on Energy, in Iowa. Video
Two weeks ago, I released my plan to power the U.S. with 100% renewable energy by 2050. This week, I'm traveling to Iowa, which has been a model state in meeting the climate challenge with a jobs agenda. Check out a quick video from my last trip and be sure to keep an eye out for more to come later this week.

(14,733 posts)I wish they'd waited til after at least a debate or two before polling their people and making an endorsement. It feels too early to be seeing endorsements being made.

(4,211 posts)Bernie isn't a fair-weather-politician who's going to play the crowd by ear.
People can reliably know in advance what they're going to get with him.
Debates can be an opportunity for corporations to control the debate (and who has access to it)... just look at what Fox news is doing with the GOP presidential debate.

Bernie is a good man but too extreme to win the general election. He will be another McGovern, Mondale or Dukakis and give us 8 years of Republican rule.
It is ok to fantasize about a "revolution" but we're not going to actually have one because the small business owners and independents will be afraid of confiscatory socialistic redistribution.
