Cecil the lion’s brother Jericho is not dead despite rumors, say researchers

Source: The Guardian

Despite reports that Cecil the lion’s brother Jericho had been shot dead by a poacher, a field researcher at Hwange Lion Research said on Saturday: “He looks alive and well.”

Another conservation worker said the lion had been seen with a female earlier in the day, “probably mating”.

Brent Staplekamp put the collar on Jericho and was monitoring his data on Saturday. Staplekamp told the Guardian he was confident that Jericho is “alive and well”.

After hearing the initial report I threw up my hands & said "I'm glad I'm old. I've had it with humans".

I can look at all the good-spirited people who have expressed outrage all over the world. I appreciate them and feel fellowship with them in their defense of wildlife and our earth. But for the stinking underbelly of homo sapiens who exploit the whole damn planet for personal gratification and attention - well, you get the idea.

It is very difficult in the 21st Century to not leave electronic footprints of your actions. Anonymous has the talent and resources to make their lives total hell.

I was very depressed behind this report....lightens my day some. Yes in spite of the killing of unarmed POC which has saddened my life greatly, the Cecil thing was just a pile on in my book. No respect of life from the human being hunters and endangered species/animal hunters....a train be a-coming. Many tracks, many trains.

for the conservationists.

This park is a very lush area full of wildlife. It is a huge tourist draw. A lot of people have invested a ton of money in the park building roads and bringing in water and making it a really nice tourist attraction that brings in a lot of money for the area.

So having someone illegally kill one of the most famous lions was really devastating for all the people who work in and around the park. And this isn't the first time this has happened. Other lions have been lured out of the park and killed. It was just the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak.

Even if they had killed the lion on private land it was still illegal. No hunting permits for lions had been issued. I guess they do have lion hunts but they are very strictly controlled.

So now all big game hunting of lions, jaguars and elephants has been suspended. I just read that legal big game hunting brings in about 40 million dollars a year so this is a very big deal.

After all of this they probably have fifty people watching Jericho at all times.

davey and how sick he would be over this. He was an agronamist who helped with land use management with the United Nations. He loved africa and so do I. Nothing personifies africa more than lions. I find myself struggling not to loathe humans.

It's like a constant war of the good guys vs the bad guys.

There are so many really awful people on this earth. But there are also a ton of people who are really good. We kind of balance each other out.

Unless we can bring the psychopaths who own and run everything under control and turn things around into an earth friendly environment for all species, I think Mother Earth is gonna get rid of us or drastically reduce our numbers like in the Middle Ages when the Bubonic plague wiped out a huge chunk of the population as a warning.

in our name. We have to push them back. I'm still awed with the Greenpeacers who tried to stop that ice breaker from going to the arctic to drill for oil and the kayakers who backed them up. We need so much more of this. After all we are millions against their thousands.

Fukushima Daichi was the key to showing how most life could end on Earth. If the spent fuel pools of reactors around the world lose their cooling (i.e. mass plague, nuclear war, etc.) there will be a mass of radioactive fires worldwide. Lethal radiation would spread in a very short time. It would basically become an ELE, a lot like the asteroid impact 65 million years ago.

Alive and well: Jericho the lion, who has been caring for the cubs of slain lion Cecil, was spotted and photographed early this morning by a field research team from WildCRU

A field research team from the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) went out at dawn to track Jericho and confirm he was alive.

The team confirmed that Jericho was seen alive and well at 6.15am (5.15am GMT).

Professor Macdonald added: 'Jericho was seen alive and well at 6.15am. He has been feeding on a giraffe kill with the lionesses from his pride.'

The group added that while Jericho is not Cecil's biological brother, the two had developed a bond that was like brotherhood.
