Cecil the lion's brother, Jericho, is also illegally killed in Zimbabwe, official says
By Michael Martinez and Deborah Bloom, CNN
Updated 2:35 PM ET, Sat August 1, 2015
(CNN)The brother of slain Cecil the lion, named Jericho, was killed Saturday in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, a senior park official told CNN.
Jericho was gunned down by a hunter operating illegally, said Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.
Cecil was also killed illegally, provoking an international outrage because he was a protected animal, and Zimbabwe is seeking the extradition of American dentist Walter Palmer on accusations that he and others illegally hunted the lion, authorities said.

(11,519 posts)First off, it isn't clear (as far as I can tell) who the second poacher is. Pretty hard for the US to extradite someone if we don't even know who it is or if he's a US citizen.
As far as the dentist, from what I've been reading the US is at least considering extraditing him to stand trial for poaching.
Sorry, I just get tired of everyone thinking that President Obama needs to personally handle each and every breach of law. I'm sure there are people in law enforcement and the justice department who are perfectly capable of taking care of these things while the President works on nuclear treaties, restoring Cuban relations, etc.

(32,062 posts)The short answer: Under the mandatory terms of the extradition treaty between Zimbabwe and the United States, the United States must initiate extradition proceedings and give over a citizen to a foreign country for prosecution ....
Unless the U.S. just doesn't feel like it.
Extradition is the formal surrender of a person by a "requested" state to another "requesting" state for prosecution. Extradition to or from the United States is a creature of treaty, which means it is little more than a contract -- one that may be ultimately unenforceable, if push comes to diplomatic shove.
The United States has had an extradition agreement with Zimbabwe since 2000.

In Kenya, rangers shoot ivory poachers on sight. I no longer think that's extreme. Perhaps the rule should be more widely adopted.

One small bright spot: if a lioness is now ready to mate, her cubs are likely to be old enough to be independent and therefore safer.
I think the Hwange pride would benefit from armed guards, too, for a while. And I have very unkindly thoughts about whoever started the original story without confirmation.

(11,573 posts)I'll wait for visual confirmation to pop the cork, but really the only explanation for Jericho's collar moving around normally is that Jericho is moving around normally. I'm assuming that "appears to be with a lioness" means that a lioness' collar is transmitting a position close to his.

(10,952 posts)gene pool as well because they take out the biggest and strongest lions. An expert was just interviwed on CNN and he was saying that they have noticed over the last 30 years that lions are getting smaller and smaller as lions who, in the past would never get a chance to breed are breeding because of bigger lions being taken out. He also said theat Jericho's death has sealed the fate for Cecil's cubs.
Right now I really hate the human race. We have no right to hunt species into extinction.

I fear it may be too late for humans. If only we'd annihilate ourselves, and leave the rest of the species alone. Maybe leave 1-2% behind, like in "The Stand" so there will be thumbed individuals to let all the animals out of their cages around the world... I don't think lions and tigers and bears and wolves and cats and dogs and dolphins and birds are going to build thermonuclear weapons and dump industrial waste into fresh waterways ... I have no idea why people think they're so damn smart and worthy.
Something like 7000 of South Africa's lions are caged, waiting for canned hunts. It is beyond incomprehensible to me.

(10,952 posts)have been put on the horns of some elephants and rhinos that makes the horns useless for ivory. The compound is not harmful to elephants and rhinos. Maybe they should look for a way to get it applied on a more animal wide basis to make the animals less desirable targets.
I don't know if you have read James Patterson's book Zoo but it makes me that we would deserve it if the animal were able to turn the tables on the human race.
Humans have no right to drive other species into extinction and countries like Zimbabwe are stupid to allow trophy hunting. Just what do they think will happen once all the animals are gone? The animals are the focus for their whole eco travel industry.

However, Dr. Palmer, who also take delight in killing members of other endangered species, knew exactly who his prey was, paid $50K to have Cecil tracked and lured out of the reserve area and bragged about it later. There is no reason to suppose the culprit in this case didn't know what he was doing and most certainly knew he was hunting where he wasn't supposed to be. I wonder if he, too, tried to impress a young lady with a photo of the carcass.

USA Today reports that Cecil's brother Jericho was killed by hunters in Hwange National Park. "We are absolutely heartbroken," Zimbabwe's Conservation Task Force wrote in a Facebook post. The hunter was operating illegally, a senior park official told CNN.
Amid the multiple reports of Jericho's death, non-profit Bhejane Trust writes that the information may be false and, "According to Brent Staplekamp at Hwange Lion Research, Jericho was alive and well at 8:30 tonight ... This false information probably stems from a current Parks investigation into another lion shot on a nearby farm."

Aug 1st 2015 5PM
Reports claim beloved animal was killed in Hwange National Park
Jericho was looking after Cecil's cubs after he was shot by Walter Palmer
Park officials said they were 'heartbroken' after the recent shooting
Team tracking his GPS have however claimed Jericho is 'alive and well'
It means they are now vulnerable and are at risk of being killed
Palmer, 55, has been in hiding since he admitted killing the beloved lion
His horrifying actions have caused outrage around the world
A clip from the piece:
.....
However a team of conservationists from Oxford University have said his death has not been confirmed, creating hope the majestic creature could still be alive.
.....
Despite the initial reports, there are hopes Jericho is still alive after the team tracking his GPS said news of his death was 'utter sensationalism'.
We can only hope and pray.

Brent Staplekamp put the collar on Jericho and was monitoring his data on Saturday. Staplekamp told the Guardian he was confident that Jericho is alive and well. Nothing looks untoward, it looks like hes been moving around all day and in fact he sent his last points at six minutes past eight our time, he said.
Staplekamp said he would be checking in on the data again at 10.06pm local time. Certainly, Ive been asked to go and look for him tomorrow morning so I will confirm he is alive and send pictures to the world, Staplekamp said.
Trevor Lane of the Bhejane Trust, a wildlife conservation group that works with Hwange national park, said in an email to the Guardian that Jericho had been seen with a female, probably mating. Lane added that parks were investigating another lion that was shot on 2 July, though that animal was not collared or with a pride.

(14,881 posts)Alive and well: Jericho the lion, who has been caring for the cubs of slain lion Cecil, was spotted and photographed early this morning by a field research team from WildCRU
A field research team from the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) went out at dawn to track Jericho and confirm he was alive.
The team confirmed that Jericho was seen alive and well at 6.15am (5.15am GMT).
Professor Macdonald added: 'Jericho was seen alive and well at 6.15am. He has been feeding on a giraffe kill with the lionesses from his pride.'
The group added that while Jericho is not Cecil's biological brother, the two had developed a bond that was like brotherhood.
