Ricketts gives another $100,000 to Nebraskans for the Death Penalty

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts has doubled his monetary backing of the petition drive to restore the death penalty in Nebraska.

A report filed Friday shows the governor gave $100,000 to Nebraskans for the Death Penalty in early July, which comes on top of the $100,000 he gave to the campaign in June.

His donations account for nearly one-third of the funds raised by the group, which has less than a month left to gather signatures on a petition seeking to put the fate of capital punishment on next year’s ballot.

The referendum petition would ask voters whether they want to undo legislation repealing the state’s death penalty.

Marta and I were approached by a paid petitioner this week to sign to put the death penalty on the ballot.

to the number of signatures needed? I notice they are desperate enough to use paid signature hunters.

Considering his wealth and position, I suspect the local bishops are not making much noise over this. But they should.

I don't really know what to say. This guy, an elected official, has given $200,000 so his state might start killing people again.

I think this is some sick power trip because, as governor, he'll have the power to issue pardons, commute sentences and that sort of thing. He probably wants the chance to throw the switch as well.

It is so sad that this is the quality of politicians we have. I think the age we're living in now might even be worse than the Gilded Age. I'm coming close to losing hope for this country.

If money can buy a life, might as well let them make dinner with the body. As a matter of fact, I think people who pay for the right to kill should be forced to butcher and consume the body of the animal or person killed.

I don't have a problem with hunting deer or other common animals in a controlled manner, if they are consumed for food. Hunting endangered animals is wrong. Humans aren't endangered, but long pork isn't on the menu.

My point was Palmer paid a quarter of what Ricketts has now paid. Being as a Governor has the final decision on executions, Ricketts is paying for the right to kill people.

Palmer killed just one lion, Ricketts gets an open season if his purchase succeeds...

on all the killing if we made them eat what they kill. Palmer left the lion's skinned, headless body behind. Would he have killed the lion if he'd been told he would have to eat it? Maybe not. Would the governor allow people to be executed in his state if he had to eat their bodies afterward? I'm not totally sure, but probably not. I just want the pay-to-kill bullshit to stop, and I'd like to make people think a bit more about the things we allow in our society, as well as the good things that we never get around to doing.

You know there are certain horrendous criminal activity's that push my "an eye for an eye" button.
The main problem...you don't if you murdered the right person...not 100%. DNA checks, getting close.
It has been done before..a big ooops. Small consolation.
And besides, I think you lose something by the very act itself. Spiritually, within the society...
