Donald Trump is staking his run for U.S. president in part on a vow to protect American jobs. But this month, one of his companies, the elite Mar-a-Lago Club resort in Florida, applied to import 70 foreign workers to serve as cooks, wait staff and cleaners.
A Reuters analysis of U.S. government data reveals that this is business as usual in the New York property magnate's empire.
Trump owns companies that have sought to import at least 1,100 foreign workers on temporary visas since 2000, according to U.S. Department of Labor data reviewed by Reuters. Most of the applications were approved, the data show.
Nine companies majority-owned by Trump have sought to bring in foreign waitresses, cooks, vineyard workers and other laborers on temporary work-visa programs administered by the Labor Department.

(22,000 posts)bring the worst. That Mexico is "smarter" than we are. That "these people" are criminals and rapists and "some might be good people". Yet he has hired over 1,100 foreigners as cheap labor on temporary work-visas.
My questions (in no particular order):
Were the people paid below minimum wage? If so, why isn't he being charged with violations of labor laws?
Since the economy from 2001 to 2010 in such bad shape, why didn't he do his part to hire Americans for those positions?
If people were on a temporary work-visa, how long was it for and are they still working for Trump's business? How many of the people have naturalized? How many have left Trump's employment? (meaning he would have been responsible for people on a temporary work-visa who are still here, in which case it is hypocritical of him to complain about people coming from other countries because that's exactly what he facilitated).
When will Señor Trump stop hiring people on temporary work-visas?

Putting aside Trump's obvious hypocrisy, is this something that you are against as a general rule?

(22,000 posts)Considering during a majority of that time unemployment was pretty high. 1,100 jobs would have helped 1,100 families some of which had their homes foreclosed on. My feeling is that Trump brought in cheap labor because he is a penny pincher.

(58,724 posts)I have no doubt that your assessment of Trump's motivation is correct.
I do think, though, that there are some circumstances where bringing in foreign workers on a work visa could be a good thing.
I myself have worked abroad and found it to be a very positive experience.

(95,337 posts)I can't imagine they were splitting the atom or performing precision surgery in those kitchens of this restaurants. But I suppose that uppity Americans might actually complain about the work conditions if they are forced to work more than 40 hours a week or not given overtime or required to work in unsafe conditions. So I suppose foreign laborers do make it easier to get away with getting less people to be overworked under much more stressful, unsafe, unsanitary conditions.
