Clinton asks union group to 'be my partner' in White House bid

Hillary Clinton on Thursday asked the country's largest labor union federation, the AFL-CIO, "to be my partner" as she seeks the Democratic nomination for the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
After meeting with union leaders, Clinton said she wants the Obama administration's proposed Pacific trade deal to meet tests on worker protection and higher wages.
Clinton is seeking the union group's endorsement, which would bring both prestige and many thousands of grassroots organizers to her campaign ahead of the November 2016 election.
"I made it clear to them that raising incomes was at the center of my economic agenda. I think its the defining challenge of our times and thats why I put out a plan for strong growth, fair growth and long-term growth," she told reporters after talks with the AFL-CIO.

Does she think Trumka and company are blithering idiots?
Points for sheer brass, though, but she has never lacked for sheer brass.

(14,733 posts)Whatever else she is, she is a politician, and trying to nail down endorsements before anyone has seen even one debate is a savvy move, even though it looks tacky to people who'd like to see some actual democracy at work.

How would any of us feel to live our lives like this?
Hillary has a strength and fortitude I can't imagine - but I'm sure you all will attribute it to something vile and nasty, 'cause, you know, it's Hillary.
Nine more years of this!

(3,963 posts)the proceeds, then take unpaid leave of absence from your jobs and use your new-found free time to work your asses to get out the vote for me, send around a few "officials" to monitor & disrupt Bernie's events. Just do these few things for me - because you love me - and I'll add your organization to my list of preferred donors.

p.s. It would be rude to mention anything about foreign donations to my, er...our foundation, anything about pay per speech, pay to play, etc, the allegedly-classified emails, the server I put in only with the intent of saving the taxpayers the expense of another government-owned/operated/secured server at my State Department, or of course any position I may or may not have had held prior to June 1st, 2015 - that's so waaaay in the past while youngsters like me are all about my future - I mean your future. And don't believe anyone making up up bullshit about me flying away on a Dassault Falcon 900B business jet, the one that burns 347 gallons of fuel per hour, after my impeccable, groundbreaking address about green energy and fighting climate change. Those photos were planted by Rush Limbaugh and the person in the photo was really Ann Coulter pretending to be me. And on the XL, just elect me and I'll tell you my position. Just trust me - I'm soooo worth it and trust is our family's middle name. I have it from a great well-placed source that as soon as I take office, when you look up "trust" on wiki, they'll have my picture!

(57,936 posts)What gain could they get by signing up with Hillary now?
It would be stupid to sign up with Hillary. There are so many issues on which she is anti-union.
As for the TPP, if just wages and unions were the problem. . . .
But the TPP is a corporate coup, and all the labor provisions put in to resolve issues resolved in favor of working people ON PAPER would be overridden by the provisions favoring management and big businesses and private enterprise, etc.
No to Hillary. No to the TPP.
But this proves to me that Hillary is essentially pro-TPP, pro corporate-coup. Because if she thinks the problems with the TPP can be resolved and support can be won with just a couple of provisions "protecting" labor but leaving the corporate perks and the special corporate arbitration and other courts for big business in place, she is either not very smart or really not on the side of the American people and especially American working people at all.
We need the freedom to change our laws and evolve our country like she evolves her opinions and the TPP will, and of this I am certain, rob us of the opportunity to be flexible in solving problems that are coming toward us. Those include environmental problems, immigration, managing corporate greed, public utilities, protecting our agriculture and our industry and our colleges and universities and health care choices.
No to the TPP.
No to Hillary Clinton. This shows where she stands on TPP.
She is looking for a "compromise." It's a rotten deal. See the letter that was leaked today. It's a corporate coup and nothing else and if we want to continue as a nation we have to say no to it.

(22,000 posts)She has the resources already to run her campaign, it's not like she needs the union endorsement right now. The difference between endorsing her now or waiting until next spring if she is the nominee is nil. Anyone that says otherwise is just outright lying. The primary is a chance for each candidate to court the voters. Whomever the nominee is the unions will support.
If the unions endorse her now they pretty much give up any pull they will have down the road for securing agreements.

..is not enough to protect us from this deal. The TPP is the loss of national sovereignty and the take over of our legal system, regulatory system and laws of environmental protection by global corporations. If they want to frack or build an oil well we cannot sue them. We cannot stop them. Our courts are now rendered moot. There's no undoing this once it passes.
They also want to privatize many of our public institutions and we'll be helpless.
So clearly she supports the TPP so long s there's some window dressing.

(57,936 posts)What will happen to the resources in our national parks if we join the TPP?
What will happen if we get a Republican president who authorizes all kinds of drilliing, mining, etc. for natural resources?
Will we be like sheep taken to be sheared?
Think coal. Think oil. Think gold and silver and other metals that may be protected in our national park system. Will the TPP endanger those sacred treasures, our national parks? Will it require that they be run not for the good of the people, for the good of nature, for the good of the animals that live in them, but according to business principles?
I am asking these questions because I read the letter written in the course of the TPP negotiations that was released today.
There is so much more thant just wages and jobs at stake, important as wages and jobs are.
