Russia vetoes bid to set up tribunal for downed flight MH17

Source: Reuters

UNITED NATIONS: Russia vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution on Wednesday that would have set up an international tribunal to prosecute those suspected of downing a Malaysia Airlines passenger airliner last year in eastern Ukraine.

Eleven countries on the 15-member council voted in favor of the proposal by Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands and Ukraine, while three countries abstained: China, Angola and Venezuela.

Flight MH17 was shot down in July 2014 with 298 passengers on board, two-thirds of them Dutch. It crashed in Ukrainian territory held by Russian-backed separatists.

It only requires one 'no' vote from a permanent member to veto a resolution. n/t ColesCountyDem Jul 2015 #4

nothing can be vetoed unless 3 of the veto power countries agree to veto it.
Right now it seems to be abused alot by the countries with this power as they can kill off anything they please be it Russia in this case or the US when it comes to protecting Israel.

it renders the whole council worthless imo as it will never allow for anything to be done to any country on the council who has that power or whos want to use it to shield a close ally like the US does for Israel.

I mean, it was Ukraine that shot down MH17, and Russia would surely want to hold the Ukrainian Neo-Nazis accountable in front of the whole world, right?

You can't dictate to a world power. That's what the veto recognizes. Either you have a veto or a nuclear armed state saying fick you, make me. Veto is at least politer
