The American dentist who used a bow and arrow to kill a well-known lion in Zimbabwe also has a felony record over the hunting of black bear in Wisconsin, court documents show.
Walter James Palmer sparked outrage when it emerged he killed Cecil the lion, a local tourist favorite who had been collared as part of an Oxford University research project.
The Minnesota-based dentist said he had the correct permits to hunt and kill the animal earlier this month. But the two people he hired to lure the lion to its death have been charged with breaching hunting quotas and appeared in court Wednesday. The Associated Press reported they had been paid $50,000 by Palmer.
Following the incident, court documents emerged showing Palmer was fined $3,000 and given a year's probation after pleading guilty over the illegal killing of a black bear in Wisconsin in 2006.

(14,576 posts)What this disgusting person (and ALL trophy hunters, for that matter) did reminds me of the sick practice in the late 1800s of just going out and shooting bison, leaving the bodies rotting on the ground. Our government actually encouraged this because it took a huge source of food, clothing and building materials away from the native tribes. After all, they reasoned, it is a part of our 'manifest destiny.'
Trophy hunting is unconscionable.

(12,882 posts)who finds fulfillment in killing things for fun (and my guess is the good doctor wasn't worried about his refrigerator being empty) is a sick SOB. Killing - for the sake of killing - isn't sport. It's assassination - it's murder. I'm not a PETA fanatic. I just think if your self-esteem is bolstered by simply proving that you can kill other beings with tools of death, you're a sick person.

I live in Minnesota and look forward to protesting him sometime.

(14,576 posts)If you're going to eat what you hunt, fine. But if you just want a head to hang on the wall, or a fur rug, then shame on you! We've got to get away from this 'dominion over' mindset and realize that we need to work with nature to ensure the earth we leave for our children and grandchildren is better than the earth we ourselves inherited from our parents and grandparents.
It is mentalities like this guy has that lead to denial of climate change and the idea that it is OK somehow to foul our environment in order for some corporatists to turn a profit.

(4,302 posts)Let bloodthirsty tourists pay to hunt down poachers that have been tagged with tracking devices (or each other). The money would go to wildlife conservation and the only thing hunted to extinction would be these maladjusted neanderthals.

(4,825 posts)As bad as poaching is for big game, climate change, and population growth that fuels climate change, and diminishing space for nature are causing mass extinctions on a global scale.
Still, we have to fight at the single issue level, partly because it is easier to feel emotionally attached, while climate change creeps on almost imperceptibly.
