Zimbabwe: Minnesota Man Being Sought For Lion Poaching

Source: CBS Minnesota

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwean police said Tuesday they are searching for an American who allegedly shot a well-known, protected lion with a crossbow in a killing that has outraged conservationists and others.

The American allegedly paid $50,000 to kill the lion named Cecil, Zimbabwean conservationists said. Authorities on Tuesday said two Zimbabwean men will appear in court for allegedly helping with the hunt.

Walter James Palmer was identified on Tuesday by both the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force and the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe as the American hunter, which police then confirmed.

The American faces poaching charges, according to police spokeswoman Charity Charamba.

And it looks like the US has an extradition treaty with Zimbabwe so this Minnesotan dentist may find himself in a Zimbabwe jail before long. I hope the sentence is long and horrible for him.

Here is a thread with more info on Walter James Palmer

One group turns to crime due to lack of options.

The other out of a sense of entitlement.

It makes me sick when people can't see the difference.

an endangered white rhino. The killing club he belongs to has a list of animals their members should check off as they kill them--including polar bears and others that are at risk of extinction. He was actually caught lying to game officers after killing a ebar in a place where he should not have done so.

The father of two had, according to the paper, killed all but one of the animals listed in records produced by bow hunting group Pope and Young. The animals on the list include polar bears, bison, grizzly bears and cougars.

"Of course, it is a personal achievement to harvest any big-game animal with a bow and arrow," said Glen Hisey, the curator of the Pope and Young records programme. "It is a way of honouring that animal for all time."

Mr Palmer has also run into legal woes. In 2008, court records show, he pleaded guilty to making a false statement to federal wildlife officials concerning the exact location of the slaying of a black bear during a guided hunt in Wisconsin. He was sentenced to a year probation.

ON EDIT: I hope his dental practice ends up failing over this so that he won't be ale to afford any more killing expeditions!

Try taking a photo or better yet, strip down to a knife and hunt your "honour" that way. What a POS for a human. I think such things should be considered Acts against Humanity because they remove something from nature that should be preserved for all, not just the privileged few .

We lived next door to a guy like this in Lincoln, NE. He built a new house--out in the country--and invited
everyone for a cocktail party. I was horrified when we went and discovered there were heads--trophies--
of all kinds of animals displayed all over the house. I was literally sick to my stomach and told my husband
we had to leave.

What kind of a sick fuck does this sort of thing? Haven't they ever heard of cameras?

Man accused in African lion death thought hunt was legal

Brian Bakst and Amy Forliti, Associated Press
Updated 5:56 pm, Tuesday, July 28, 2015

. . .

The lion's death has outraged animal conservationists and others, including U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat. In a statement late Tuesday, the congresswoman called for an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to see whether any U.S. laws were violated.

. . .

According to U.S. court records, Palmer pleaded guilty in 2008 to making false statements to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about a black bear he fatally shot in western Wisconsin. Palmer had a permit to hunt but shot the animal outside the authorized zone in 2006, then tried to pass it off as being killed elsewhere, according to court documents. He was given one year probation and fined nearly $3,000.

. . .

A Facebook page for Palmer's Minnesota dental practice was taken offline Tuesday after users flooded it with comments condemning Palmer's involvement in the hunt. Hundreds of similar comments inundated a page for his dental practice on the review platform Yelp, which prior to Tuesday had only three comments.

Palmer is properly licensed and able to practice in the state, according to the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. Board records show that Palmer was the subject of a sexual harassment complaint settled in 2006, with Palmer admitting no wrongdoing and agreeing to pay a former receptionist more than $127,000.

Palmer pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2008 related to the poaching of a black bear in Wisconsin two years earlier. Palmer and others transported the bear, which was killed 40 miles outside of a legal hunting zone, to a registration station inside the legal area. Palmer was sentenced to one year of probation and fined nearly $3,000.

In the spring of 2003, Palmer was convicted in Otter Tail County in western Minnesota and paid a small fine for fishing without a license, a misdemeanor.

Palmer is listed as a member of the trophy hunting organization Safari Club International. His profile on SCI’s website lists 43 kills, including caribou, moose, deer, buffalo, a polar bear and mountain lion.

In 2009, Palmer agreed to a settlement with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry over allegations that he sexually harassed a receptionist. She alleged that Palmer made comments about her breasts, buttocks and genitalia. Without admitting guilt, Palmer settled and paid $127,500 to the woman, who also was his patient. The settlement included references to his bear-hunting conviction and “substandard record keeping.”

according to conservationists, Cecil had 24 cubs which will likely be killed now because he is not there to protect them and rival males will kill off all his offspring........it's the natural order. So this jack-off actually killed 25 lions in one fell swoop.......what a way to 'honor' them. I wonder how 'honored' he'd feel if he were skinned, beheaded and hung on someone's wall?
