Trump adviser Michael Cohen apologizes for rape comment

Washington (CNN)A top adviser to Donald Trump apologized Tuesday for comments he made in an explosive interview while defending the Republican presidential candidate from a decades-old rape accusation.

Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump and an executive vice president at The Trump Organization, asserted in an interview published Monday in the Daily Beast that legally "you cannot rape your spouse."

The rape accusation stems from an accusation Trump's then-wife Ivana Trump leveled at her husband during divorce proceedings in the early 1990s, an accusation she walked back in a statement Tuesday.

Marital rape today is illegal in all 50 states and non-consensual sex between spouses does in fact constitute rape.

Either way, it's a messed up situation. I'm not what sure what her rationale is for defending her ex-husband, unless the statements she made 30 years ago truly were baseless.

Ivana's graphic deposition in the divorce case is revealed in the book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump by Harry Hurt III. She said that the couple had a heated argument over a botched scalp reduction surgery Trump had had, and she described how Trump's "violent assault" included tearing out clumps of her hair and then tearing off her clothes...

Hill writes: "Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months. Ivana is terrified. It is a violent assault...According to versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, "he raped me..."

...After being challenged on his claim about spousal rape - the marital rape exemption in New York was struck down in 1984 according to the Daily Beast - Cohen threatened epic legal action if the story was published..."I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we're in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don't have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know," Cohen said.
