Woman Dies in Police Custody in Houston

Source: KTRK

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 29-year-old woman died in police custody Sunday afternoon, according to HPD.

Authorities were called to a disturbance at a business in northwest Houston. When officers and an HFD crew arrived, they found a woman they say was acting erratically. She was taken into police custody and then to jail on a public intoxication charge.

According to an HPD spokesperson, upon arrival she was found to be unresponsive. An EMS crew was called out to revive her. She was then transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of her death is unknown at this time.

The woman was examined and cleared to be transported to the jail where she was going to be charged with public intoxication.

According to the officer who drove her to the jail, Smith said, "she was talkative for most of the ride there but upon arrival to the jail she was found to be unresponsive."

The fire department was called a second time, paramedics were able to revive her and she was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"It's our understanding ... she has a history of drug use, however in this particular case we're awaiting autopsy results," Smith said.

An investigation will follow by HPD Homicide and the Internal Affairs Division.
