Europe backs Iran nuclear deal in signal to U.S. Congress

Source: Reuters

BRUSSELS, July 20 (Reuters) - The European Union approved the Iran nuclear deal with world powers on Monday, a first step towards lifting Europe's economic sanctions against Tehran that the bloc hopes will send a signal that the U.S. Congress will follow.

In a message mainly aimed at sceptical voices in the U.S. Congress and strong resistance from Israel, EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels stressed that there was no better option available.

"It is a balanced deal that means Iran won't get an atomic bomb," said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. "It is a major political deal."

Ministers waited until the U.N. Security Council also voted to endorse the July 14 accord and then issued a nine-point text formally committing to a gradual lifting of sanctions along with the United States and the United Nations.

So everyone is for this deal except the GOP and Israel, who of course want to start yet another war in the Middle East.

interest that are antithetical to the entire purpose of this council.

"Under the Charter, the Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.

The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

The Security Council also recommends to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and the admission of new Members to the United Nations. And, together with the General Assembly, it elects the judges of the International Court of Justice."

I am very pleased to see that the vote on the Iran Deal was unanimous.

republicans in Congress. If anything, it may make them more likely to try to kill the nuclear deal just to prove that the US is so strong that we don't care what anyone else in the world thinks. We do what we want.

A lot of cons seem to have a crush on Putin because they admire authoritarians like him.

Surely his opinion will carry weight with them?

for the most part, the republicans in congress. (And RW love of Putin is more true in Europe than in the US although there are certainly many RW wackos here who admire his 'family values' and nationalism stands.)

The tea party faction in congress may be an exception but most republicans probably view Putin as an 'enemy' they can dangle in front of people to justify large military budgets.

If the republicans kill the deal in congress, the rest of the world will ignore sanctions and start trading with Iran. What I don't know is if the US congress kills the deal, are the UN inspections off? If so, the rest of the world will still trade with Iran and there will be no enforced inspections. This seems to be a lot of Kabuki theater.
