Bill Cosby talks in graphic detail about his calculated pursuit of young women in a previously unpublicized deposition

He was not above seducing a young model by showing interest in her fathers cancer. He promised other women his mentorship and career advice before pushing them for sex acts. And he tried to use financial sleight of hand to keep his wife from finding out about his serial philandering.
Bill Cosby admitted to all of this and more over four days of intense questioning 10 years ago at a Philadelphia hotel, where he defended himself in a deposition for a lawsuit filed by a young woman who accused him of drugging and molesting her.
Even as Mr. Cosby denied he is a sexual predator who assaulted many women, he presented himself in the deposition as an unapologetic, cavalier playboy, someone who used a combination of fame, apparent concern and powerful sedatives in a calculated pursuit of young women a profile at odds with the popular image he so long enjoyed, that of father figure and public moralist.
In the deposition, which Mr. Cosby has for years managed to keep private but was obtained by The New York Times, the entertainer comes across as alternately annoyed, mocking, occasionally charming and sometimes boastful, often blithely describing sexual encounters in graphic detail.

(23,272 posts)But is it usual for these types of depositions to become public?
Don't get me wrong, Cosby is a monster and the sooner everyone knows the better.
I'm just weirdly interested in the technicality....

(60,536 posts)The parties have been prohibited from releasing the memorandum because of a confidentiality clause that was part of the settlement agreement, but the deposition itself was never sealed. This month, Ms. Constands lawyer asked the court to lift the confidentiality clause so her client would be free to release the nearly 1,000-page deposition transcript. The Times later learned that the transcript was already publicly available through a court reporting service.

(23,272 posts)and hadn't thoroughly examined the details.
And obviously didn't closely read the article...

(60,536 posts)Cosby lives twenty minutes away from us, a beautiful piece of property (acres and acres of land). We drove by it earlier this evening on the way to dinner; he's hired security guards, we saw two at the front gate. We've never seen guards there before and were quite impressed about that given the house is only about 100 feet back from the gate. That's all changed now.

The court's rules state that unless there is an objection, documents filed in the court will be unsealed automatically two years after the conclusion of litigation...Cosby's attorneys objected, saying it would violate Cosby's right to privacy...and would violate the confidentiality agreement signed by the two parties.
...(The judge)...argued that while Cosby is clearly a public figure, when he talks about issues of public policy like unwed mothers and crime, he (also) becomes a "public moralist," which...opens him up to "legitimate public scrutiny." The release of these documents...is therefore important for the public to weigh "the stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist and Bill Cosby, the subject of serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct..."
...(A)s to the confidentiality agreement...the two parties never filed (it) with the court, so the court has no obligation to honor it...
Does that mean this wouldn't have happened if the confidentiality agreement had been filed with the court? Well, maybe Bill can get reimbursement by suing his lawyer!

Somehow this makes it okay.

(14,459 posts)A not as clever and cute as we thought sociopath. He played a stunningly good public role though...but it seems he was leading fairly open double life among the entertainment community.

(4,673 posts)sad commentary on what women in this country, and around the world, are up against when it comes to rape. It helps keep the number of unreported rapes in the US at around 80%.

(1,307 posts)just a few months ago you popped up in every Cosby thread and were criticizing the women for not coming forward (as well as displaying any understanding of the fear people have of reporting sexual assaults, especially amongst a very powerful, well liked person.) There were at least 3 or 4 dozen women and you didn't believe until, apparently, court transcripts came out recently.
A whole bunch of women will now make up stories only because the guy has money. perhaps two or three of those stories are true but the suing and lawyers after all these years will make all of them lose credibility except in extreme feminist circles.
yeah, that was written by you! (and some of your cosby-related posts were hidden by jury decision, I can't imagine how nasty those were.)

(11,014 posts)Not everyone who is accused of rape is guilty as some would like to believe.
Nevertheless, a viscerally feisty group of people goes about alerting on and hiding posts where doubts are raised about some evidence. There was nothing in those posts that deserved them to be hidden ... except that some people disagreed with the content.
Hiding posts that one disagrees with is what makes DU suck. It prevents open dialogue and debate.

(1,307 posts)and their claims, all consistent with one another, were not enough for you. Multiple times you said these women were looking for money.
You have women issues, regardless of you possibly being a woman and/or supporting Hillary Clinton.

(9,999 posts)is NOT a sex act. It is an act of power, domination and control - in another word - rape. This was not a man with an out of control libido - it is an act of violence with sex as the weapon.

(5,845 posts)....he drugged them to rape them. People who are incapacitated and can't consent are rape victims.

(30,250 posts)He drugged them and took advantage of them while they couldn't put up a fight. Why is this SOB not in jail?????
On another note, I noticed that almost every single woman he attacked was white. Was there also something racial going on? Did he get a kick out of raping white girls that maybe wouldn't have taken notice of him otherwise, even though he was a successful actor?

(2,331 posts)I think your conclusion is baseless and insulting to the victims.

(30,250 posts)I don't see it that way. I see a coward who drugged many women and took advantage of them in their incapacitated state.

(22,000 posts)It pretty much has silenced those who have defended him. While it still isn't a conviction, which would have been much better, it looks like it will end his career. That is better than nothing.

(2,978 posts)I mean, he didn't sell the drugs, but he "trafficked" them under the wide interpretations usually used by law enforcement against poor people who are caught sharing their pain meds with family because they can't afford a doctor's visit and new prescription.
I'm surprised no one's gone after him for this---forgetting the rape for a minute. He used a prescription for himself and dispensed those opioids to someone else. I thought that was highly illegal.

(55,894 posts)I know a lot of DU'ers like to post how they thought Cosby was lame etc.
But I am sad that an influential comedian and actor who influenced culture so strongly ends up having such an incredible, destructive dark side.
I think it was Sinbad who quipped something like- Black people saw Cosby on I Spy as a black guy playing tennis, white people saw a black guy with a gun...

(9,894 posts)I grew up spending many a happy hour listening to him.
It seems to me that he started out during a time when these actions were deemed socially "OK" (not morally right, certainly) and probably not uncommon (I suspect there are other male stars of his age and older out there shaking in their boots right now), but he doesn't seem to get it that it has become morally wrong (which it always was) and NOT OK, and he kind of missed the boat on the change.
From the part of the deposition I read, he just doesn't seem to think what he did was wrong and he has kind of an "all in a days work" vibe when he talks about his actions.
Sociopath maybe, but seemingly more like a guy who just doesn't get it morally and socially. I was amazed reading the depo excerpts that he didn't seem to hide or talk around situations that clearly made him look like a complete ass.

(55,894 posts)One of the other band members, Jackie Fox, just had a story done about how Kim Fowley drugged and raped her. In front of a lot of people. The story goes into detail into what an abusive lecher this guy was and yet
.
when this asswipe just passed away not long ago he had all kinds of accolades thrown at his corpse.
