China evacuates over 800K ahead of Typhoon Chan-hom (photos, video)

Source: AP

BEIJING — Chinese authorities have evacuated more than 800,000 people and canceled hundreds of flights as a strong typhoon with wind gusts up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour headed toward the country's southeastern coast on Saturday.

Typhoon Chan-hom is expected to hit land Saturday afternoon between the coastal cities of Rui'an and Zhoushan, south of Shanghai, according to China's national weather service. It said the typhoon might be the most powerful to hit China since the communist government took power in 1949.

Some 865,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas of Zhejiang province, the provincial Civil Affairs Bureau said. The provincial flood control bureau said 28,764 ships had been ordered back to port by late Friday.

The country's railway service said more than 100 trains between the region's cities were canceled through Sunday.

This satellite image taken by the JMA MTSAT-2 satellite at 9;30 a.m. EDT on Thursday, July 9, 2015, shows Tropical Storm Linfa, left, tracking westward parallel to the coast of China, and Typhoon Chan-hom, over the Ryukyu Trench south of Okinawa, Japan, on a track heading northwest toward the China coast north of Wenzhou. Southeastern provinces in China were alerted about possible flooding and severe weather this week from both approaching storms. (NOAA via AP)

Probably something along the lines of how the imperialists from the west and Japan have unleashed the typhoon on them.

Sad thing is, if there is major loss of life, the outside will never really know about it. The DPRK will never ask for outside help and will cover up any news that's seen as negative.

The forecast now puts landfall near the DMZ instead of in North Korea.

I live just west of Seoul and 26 km south of the DMZ.

I will post an update again in the morning.

Even though it might be downgraded to a tropical storm there was so much energy built into the system that the potential for flooding is significant.

Typhoon Chan-hom in particular is expected to bring torrential downpours, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

snip

The KMA said Chan-hom, which was 80 km north of Guam, has the potential of becoming "very strong," measuring 380 km in radius and packing winds of 49 m/s.

A weatherman said Korea will come under the indirect influence of Chan-hom on Thursday as it passes northeast of Taiwan.

The typhoon will drive up a tropical rain front currently located south of Korea, bringing monsoon rains from Tuesday morning in the southern part of the nation.

Typhoon Linfa is also heading north toward Taiwan, while typhoon Nangka is heading north from Guam to Japan.

The KMA said the three typhoons are affecting each other's path and intensity and that typhoon Chan-hom is expected to be the one that will affect Korea the most.
