Pot plan could boost union membership, tax revenue, supporter says

Source: WLWT

Responsible Ohio has collected more than 700,000 signatures to get legal marijuana on ballot

By Todd Dykes

CINCINNATI —The push to legalize pot in Ohio could create thousands of new union jobs.

Local investors with big stakes in a pro-marijuana ballot initiative have agreed to let workers at proposed marijuana grow sites in Butler, Clermont and Hamilton counties form unions.

The move does not come without controversy.

As WLWT News 5 investigative reporter Todd Dykes explains, anyone who mentions the word marijuana is likely to get an earful from both supporters and detractors, but the debate about the pros and cons of pot is not slowing down the man who wants weed to be legal across the Buckeye State.

All the rock festivals on the East Coast will move there.

At all festivals the cops seem to delight in pulling people over with K9's and busting people over a few grams of mj.

I hope they legalize to help these people.

And writes it into the state constitution. Ohio passed a similar initiative about casinos a few years ago.

Now, the Republican state legislature is putting another initiative on the ballot that would effectively block this one. It says that constitutional monopolies won't be allowed. If both get on the ballot and both pass, the pot initiative is canceled out, even if it gets more votes.

Marijuana legalization proponents are split on this whole thing. Some say it's a bad form of legalization; others say any form of legalization is better than prohibition.

The UFCW has been organizing pot industry workers for several years...

If it's legal couldn't people just grow their own? That would seem to diminish the damage done by any monopoly.

But only the 10 already-allocated commercial grows paid for by initiative investors could grow commercially.

There are other business opportunities in this model, though: Production facilities and pot stores.
