White House defends immigration policies after killing of San Francisco woman
Source: The Hill
The White House on Monday defended its immigration policies and blasted Republicans following the killing of a San Francisco woman allegedly by an illegal immigrant.
When asked if the case was a failure of the administrations enforcement policies, White House press secretary Josh Earnest chided Republicans for blocking a bipartisan immigration bill that would have boosted funding for border security.
I recognize that people want to play politics with this, Earnest said. The fact is the president has done everything within his power to make sure that were focusing our law enforcement resources on criminals and those who pose a threat to public safety.
Kathryn Steinle, 32, was shot and killed Wednesday at a popular tourist destination in San Francisco. The suspect, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had multiple felony convictions and had been deported to Mexico five times.

As the article explains, the federal and San Francisco governments have pointed the fingers at each other: Immigration and Customs Enforcement for not being notified prior to Sanchez's release (despite specifically requesting for such), and San Francisco for ICE not issuing a court order for extended detention (as opposed to a detainer request, which has no legal binding).

"Mr. (or Ms.) Candidate, how do you feel about the President's immigration policies?"
"I think it was the right move."
"Like that guy in San Francisco, who was deported 6 times and came back and shot that woman for no reason?"
"Uhhh."

He also claims he doesn't remember the shooting because he was zonked out on sleeping pills he found in the trash.

But still not an 'administration' problem.

(6,241 posts)It's the sanctuary city thing. If it were a law that we agree with, we'd be furious with any community that wouldn't cooperate with the Feds. Hell, Arizona got a lot of shit for their enforcement of immigration laws, despite what the feds said.
If it was gay marriage, and a town wouldn't allow their go along with the recent Supreme Court ruling, there would be lawsuits and a whole mess.
But it's ok for San Francisco to refuse to cooperate with the INS for... reasons.

(13,184 posts)Obama has been the deporter in chief.
Under Obama, hundreds of thousands have been deported for drug offenses alone, including more than 30,000 for simple pot possession. Not just undocumented immigrants, but legal immigrants, even permanent residents, including people who have lived just about their whole lives here and have US citizen family members.
