Israel Gears Up To Battle Iran Deal In Congress

Source: Times of Israel

Israel is preparing for the next phase of its fierce opposition to the Iran nuclear deal, by lobbying US Congressmen and women to block the emerging comprehensive agreement once it is finalized and goes to lawmakers for approval. But some in Jerusalem fear it is a lost cause given the belief that the potential economic benefits from resuming business with Iran could significantly outweigh political considerations.

The US-led P5+1 world powers and Tehran are currently in the midst of negotiations to hammer out a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and remove crippling sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic. On Saturday, the Associated Press reported that the powers and Iran had drawn up a draft document on the pace and timing of sanctions relief, advancing on one of the most contentious issues at their negotiations.

Israel reacted furiously to the development, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning on Sunday that the six world powers were dangerously caving to the Islamic Republic’s every demand.

“It seems that the nuclear talks in Iran have yielded a collapse, not a breakthrough,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting. “The major powers’ concessions are growing.”

2. Why is a foreign government even allowed to lobby our elected officials?

I would think accepting anything (even advice) from a foreign government to influence a vote would put you on a list... a list of traitors.

Related bundles will. This is beyond disgusting.

I hope that our legislators followed the last election in Israel enough to know the kind of person Netanyahu is. A mean spirited liar who is disliked even by his own party.

I will trust President Obama, secretary Kerry and their peers in the 5 other countries over a man who last March indicated that even if the Iranians complied with the framework based deal and did not build a nuclear weapon for 10 years -it was a bad deal.this makes it clear there can be no good deal.

I have been reading Gary Hart's new book and there is a reference to why the deal was important as an Obama goal. His reason because it could prevent t an Israeli strike that starts another mideast war.

In fact, it seems clear Netanyahu wants us to bomb Iran or back them if they do.

N
My take best wishes to John Kerry and Barak Obama who both care a hell of a lot more about tikun olam than the PM of Israel does.

...completely. President Obama and SOS Kerry are seeking this deal in the best interests of the American people and to secure a more peaceful future for all of us. It would be nice to see them get some support for their hard work.

Yes both JK and Obama had and still work tireless for the common good. They deserve support. Not backstabbing from Republicans and a certain aisle of Democrats alike.

It is so disconcerting to hear Netanyahu essentially say he will lobby Congress on this.

I hope it will allow people to really see him for what he is. He was completely off base when he spoke at the UN with his idiotic cartoon missexplaining nuclear weapons. It appears he was either very misinformed or intentionally speaking lies.

I hope the contrast of Secretary Moniz, a real expert, and Secretary Kerry, an honest statesman, who listens to Moniz on the technical issues to this angry mean spirited mam who demonstrated before his election that he places no value in truth if a lie helps will be apparent to our legislators.

I hope they will see that if they vote down a reasonable deal they are very possibly voting for war with a more powerful, bigger country than Iran. Much more than the IWR this is a vote that really could make war more likely.

This will be a spectacle of influence. Call your congresspersons to support the Iran deal. We will see if Netanyahu's temper tantrums and irrational hate are in charge of our foreign policy.

By her yesturdays statement basically saying Iran deal (which she initiated while SoS) now is uneiseful cause Iran will remain an ennemy.
She surely rather prefer to content her WS friends.... and also she surely wants to highlight her own SD tenure by undermining her successor's work. So low manoeuvers....

The US and the other countries are intentionally dealing just with the nuclear program in this agreement. The reason is that it represents a potential cause (or excuse) for war. However, it does not have the goal of addressing all issues including those she lists.

It is a matter of emphasis. Most of the foreign ministers have spoken of the deal itself ... not what it doesn't attempt to do. Here, consider who she is speaking to. People concerned with Israel. Another point is she is addressing Israel ' s real problem with this - that Iran gains acceptance worldwide and that changes the geopolitical balance.

In this, while everything she says is true, clearly there would then be an opportunity to work on those issues and it ignores that Iran DOES gain some access.

Her comments have been that she welcomes a good deal. This is a perfect statement and I don't fault her. It is in essence anything from negative to neutral to positive. She has the right to at least see what the deal is.
