(205,995 posts)The new revelations come as law enforcement officials chase the most promising lead yet in the manhunt for the pair. DNA from Matt and Sweat was found in a burglarized cabin not far from where the convicted murders broke out more than two weeks ago, a law enforcement source told CNN.
Personal items, including boots, were discovered Saturday inside the cabin in Mountain View, some 20 miles west of the prison, another law enforcement source briefed on the investigation told CNN's Deborah Feyerick.
The items left behind, and the manner in which they were left, suggest the pair were surprised and left in a hurry, according to the source.
The boots left in the cabin suggest one of the fugitives may be barefoot, the source said, possibly hindering his ability to move through the dense brush. But there may have been other boots and shoes in the cabin that were taken by the pair.

Richard W. Matt, one of the convicted murderers who staged an elaborate escape from New Yorks largest prison nearly three weeks ago, was shot on Friday in a burst of gunfire by law enforcement officers, two people with knowledge of the situation said.
The shots rang out as law enforcement officers zeroed in on Friday on an area of remote terrain in Franklin County, near where investigators discovered evidence in two hunting cabins that indicated the missing inmates had been there.

(31,849 posts)which is "police departments scattered all over the country which are largely the fault of inadequate training and not enough independent oversight and the fact many police departments seem to be doing a pretty shitty job at weeding out people who never should have even been hired" ... that if left unchecked, might get around to treating white people the way they do those Black folks.
That is how your dismissal of white privilege comes across ... to those without that privilege.

(17,601 posts)MALONE, N.Y.Richard Matt, one of two escaped murderers from an upstate New York prison, has been shot by officers involved in a nearly three-week manhunt.
Matt has been shot, hes down, Lenny DePaul, a former U.S. Marshal told CNN.
However, sources confirm that he has died from his injuries. Specifically, federal sources say he was killed by a border patrol tactical team.
Matt apparently shot at a driver in a camper near Malone, New York, a federal law enforcement source said. The driver called 911. When officers arrived, gunfire erupted and Matt was shot dead.
Officers are currently pursuing fugitive David Sweat, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said Friday, but they do not have eyes on him.
They stuck together, DePaul said. They needed each other.

This guy was a pure sociopath likened by several to Hannibal Lecter. They had special provisions in the courtroom when he was being tried including the removal of all the glass so he couldn't break it and use it as a weapon, the had sharpshooters positioned. They were scared to death of him.
He had to be hit.

(37,453 posts)which makes sense since the gun powder odor gave them away..
The shooting of the camper led officers to a cabin Friday afternoon, where they discovered the smell of gunpowder, said Cuomo and Joseph D'Amico, superintendent of New York State Police. There was an indication that someone had recently been there and fled out the back door, he said.
While searching the property, officers heard coughs and tactical teams came upon Matt in the woods.
"They verbally challenged him, told him to put up his hands. And at that time he was shot when he didn't comply," D'Amico said.
A 20-gauge shotgun was recovered from Matt, who did not fire his weapon, D'Amico said.

I don't care if they are excaped convicts, or Dylan Roof.
If they are a threat do the cop, I never have a problem with a cop using self defense. If they are not a threat, the cop should do not harm.

But that the problem ... the white privilege problem ... or hasn't folks noticed, cops are pretty good at arresting white people, even those having committed horrific violence, and hold weapons; but, not so good at encountering unarmed Black folks, jay-walking or shopping, or with broken tail lights.

(1,803 posts)That is the reality of the situation. Matt was serving 25 to life and Sweat life without parole. Both would have grown old and died in a NYDOCS correctional facility even before the escape. If captured, each would get additional jail time, which would be meaningless. More importantly, they each would serve the rest of their sentences and spend the remainder of their lives in a Special Housing Unit (SHU) cell in 23-hr lockdown (1 hr outdoor rec/day in what amounts to a cage attached to the cell), with limited personal belongings, no privileges, minimal contact with other prisoners and the outside world, and no chance whatsoever at reprieve.
I just hope Sweat doesn't harm anyone before he is found and dispatched (or dispatches himself).
The world is a better place without Matt in it, and will be better yet once Sweat is gone too. While I'm opposed to the death penalty, these two were poster children for it.
