Jindal: Same-Sex Marriage Ruling Is 'All Out Assault' On Religious Liberty
Source: TPM
-snip-
Read Jindal's full statement below:
The Supreme Court decision today conveniently and not surprisingly follows public opinion polls, and tramples on states rights that were once protected by the 10th Amendment of the Constitution. Marriage between a man and a woman was established by God, and no earthly court can alter that.
This decision will pave the way for an all out assault against the religious freedom rights of Christians who disagree with this decision. This ruling must not be used as pretext by Washington to erode our right to religious liberty.
The government should not force those who have sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage to participate in these ceremonies. That would be a clear violation of Americas long held commitment to religious liberty as protected in the First Amendment.
I will never stop fighting for religious liberty and I hope our leaders in D.C. join me.

(2,150 posts)the decision is an affirmation of law: One religion may not impose its dogma upon others. The de- humanization of gays and the opposition to gay marriage has its base in one thing, and that is a religious value. That is not my religious belief, and I will not let, and the SC agrees anyone force their religion on me.

(11,522 posts)I've never been able to find one solitary thing that Christ said on this topic, maybe Jindal knows something the rest of us don't. Or perhaps he should become more Christ-like himself and be more concerned with helping the sick and poor instead of worrying about other people's private lives.

CELEBRATE!
Congratulate everyone you know and wish them joy.
Bless everyone you meet.
Then celebrate again.
Celebrate until Mr. Jindal wonders if he should join in. And then celebrate that achievement too.
By the way: Congratulations on today's victory. May God bless you. She gave this day.

Except that marriage in biblical times were between one man and potentially several women.
The government should not force those who have sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage to participate in these ceremonies.
AND IT ISN'T!

(115,836 posts)The government can't force any religious organization to conduct marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. If the Bible-Banging Hater Church of the Lily-White Jesus preaches that teh gays are all goin' to hell, they can continue do that. The thing that's different is that states have to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. No church will be required to perform a religious wedding ceremony if they don't want to. Plenty of churches will, so no worries. Teh Gays will have their weddings at those heathen Lutheran and UCC and Episcopal churches and you and the rest of the "Christians" will remain free to stew in your own bile.

(9,995 posts)The law can't force churches or religious people to do anything in their *religious* roles. This is a civil function, marriage is a *legal* construct, and Piyush Jindal knows that, or should. He's just talking out the right side of his face.

(34,137 posts)And blocked by the bigoted laws passed by state governments?
In one of the articles I read about a Unitarian Universalist church in Kentucky that has refused to perform any weddings since the law was passed in their state blocking same sex marriage. I've read of other UU churches willing to perform SSM but which were not permitted to do so.
Why is THAT not restricting religious freedom? Just because your bigoted sect wants to restrict other people's rights, Mr. Jindal, that does not make them the definers of "religious liberty."
As soon as ONE church was willing to perform same sex marriage, the laws against it should have been declared unconstitutional. Doing otherwise was a restriction of religious freedom. THAT is what the First Amendment was about - not letting one religion define the beliefs of all others or even of the people who don't believe in any religion.

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal declared Wednesday his candidacy for the 2016 presidential nomination, although the Rhodes Scholar and one-time Republican rising star faces difficult odds in a jam-packed primary field. Heres what you need to know about Jindal:
Previous Occupation: LSU Tigers DE Coach/Asst. Defensive Coordinator (2003-2005)
Platform: To bring coastal wetlands restoration program he implemented in Louisiana to rest of country
Current Approval Rating: Nowhere to go but up
Education: Pretty impressive for a man who questions evolution
Career Accomplishments: Has for years dutifully served the people of a state he desperately wants to abandon
Biggest Strengths: Somehow least electable Catholic candidate in field that also includes Rick Santorum; as a child of immigrants, understands what it takes to keep them out of country; candidate best able to connect with Indian Americans who make up 65 percent of Republican primary voters
Foreign Policy Experience: Has already been publicly discredited by David Cameron and other European leaders
What Sets Him Apart: Brings diversity to bottom third of GOP candidate polls
Days He Has Left As Young Political Hotshot: 29
Will Most Likely Be Remembered For: Endorsing Jeb Bush after Iowa caucus

(3,433 posts)I don't recall reading in the majority opinion that christian people are now forced to get married to someone of the same sex. The fact that a bunch of strangers of the same sex are marrying each other is no more an "assault against the religious freedom rights of Christians who disagree with this decision" than Jewish people refusing to believe that Jesus Christ was the messiah and have the gaul to recognize their Sabbath on Saturday rather than Sunday.
